Come on, don't be shy...
Are we graced by a CVO, LG, OBE, ISO or GCMG?
I had a lovely chat with Georgiana Osborne, Lord Lieutenant of Angus yesterday, while eldest_OAB receiving his Queens Badge and being made a 'Queens Man'.
Apart from family connections, it got me all interested in how you are appointed to such roles - or are nominated for such honours and roles. I had never realised there were so many honours and so many people recognised.
SPoNGe.
you mean other than academic / professional quals?
I mean officially I am BSc (Hons) Dunelm, MRSC and should also be CChem if I could ever be bothered to do the paperwork.
Bronze Swimming Certificate ( with Honours)
SSc. Silver Swimming Certificate. 😉
while eldest_OAB receiving his Queens Badge and being made a ‘Queens Man’.
Congrats on that. It's a lot of work.
Mt wife is an officer in the GB and they had their Queens Award presentation on Saturday night.
Out of 27 awards in the entire country she had 6 girls receiving theirs.
I'm an Earl and an OBE.
"Earlobe".
_ I do mean Honours not academic...
@mrs_perchypanther - good effort for that! 25th Stirling (Dunblane) also had a good showing on Sunday.

Other than academic? FRHistS
Other than Tufty club membership the best I can manage would be some medals with the Queens head on. Nothing exciting, and given just for attendance really.
My late father-in-law was an OBE QPM KBE
IGMC
I Know an OBE. He said the ceremony was quite the treadmill and impersonal.
When my time comes, I'll refuse, of course 🙂
uphillcursing - the first rule of the Tufty club is...
thepurist, MTC
NBQAA
I was given "Esquire" by the Queen last year.
I always wanted to be made a Nigerian Chief but as I've aged I've realised that Chieftancy isn't the bed of roses you might think it is; you only get given a Chieftancy if you inherit the title or give away lots of money and it marks you out to be pestered by favour-seekers, beggars and fraudsters for the rest of your life.
I’ve had numbers after my name....
I used to frequently see my name followed be "allegedly" when I was younger, apparently something to do with her majesty wanting to keep me at her pleasure
I have a Degree In Computer Knowledge...so you understand why I don't use it. (irrespective of how accurate it might be!)
I was given “Esquire” by the Queen last year.

Prince Philip once gave me a Razzle.
I’ve had numbers after my name….
You are Jean Valjean and I claim my 5 candlesticks
I only got to President's Badge in the BB. Quite a step-up to the Queen's Badge!
"When my time comes, I’ll refuse, of course"
Knew someone who was going to do that - but his wife threatened to tell his mum and he was forced to accept an MBE!
Gwen keeps you well in line there Crispin.... 😉
BSc (Hons) here..
Used to be addressed with Esq.
By the bank.
the first rule of the Tufty club is…
"When you want to go to the ice-cream van always take mummy with you"
Academic ? Yes.
Honouree ? No and never intend to chase that particular social ladder.
I know a CBE he is a front bottom
I know of an OBE, he's a retired prison governor & he even puts 'OBE' after his name on Facebook ffs!
I was MRaeS but I don't know if professional accreditations you have to pay to upkeep (and only have by dint of being in the industry a while) count. You can keep these letters if you keep paying us... That was fine whilst work were happy to pay. Then the redundancies started looming...
I used to work with a guy who had an MBE. He added it to his corporate email address and made sure it was in the staff directory. He was a knob.
my ex boss arranged for his wife to get one - well initiated the process that her colleagues progressed. All a bit weird really.
not that close in my family. my grandfather was quite well travelled and a decent expert in his field (organic chemistry, specifically grains & cereals). prior to that it was the usual story of abject rural poverty..
In wider family, closest I think I'd come is my great-uncle - was in charge of the shipyard when they launched the QE2, and also for Britannia - I think he was a CBE in the end. RHS of Liz.

A posh client of mine (whose name you would recognise) was added to our record system by an exceptionally dim witted colleague who spelled it with the OBE on the end of the surname, a little something like this: Sir Jimmy Savileobe
OBE: Other b#ggers efforts
MBE: Many b#ggers efforts
CBE: Copious b#ggers efforts
CMG: Call me god
KCMG: Keep calling me god
A workmate of mine was a councillor in the town and had business cards with that on for when he was doing councillor stuff.
He was booking a light with BA and just handed over a card for the guy to get some details. Their system couldn't handle councillor so upgraded him to Count Tony H. A great many upgrades followed over the years.
Saw this thread and immediately thought about this...
A colleague at work was appointed to the position of Assistant Head of Lower School.
According to his ID tag he was an AssHoLS.
@eddiebaby, an old friend of mine, before her demise, was Lady Diana Spencer. Not that one, obviously, but she also did well on the hotel/airline upgrade front!
My wife can use QPM after her name if she chooses to* after she was awarded it in the new years honours this year.
She officially received it two weeks ago at Buckingham Palace. I'm not a massive fan of royalty myself but I couldn't help but being massively impressed by the whole occasion (not to mention hugely proud of my wife for what has done to be awarded it)
*She chooses not to
I have the letters BIG before my name. It's a kind of honour.
got letters in front of my name
DNR
My step-sister is a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) and as such gets to call herself Dame. If she wants. But she doesn't 🙂
Not sure how people on here know this about me but they obviously do as they often post it in response to my comments
S.Caredypants I struggle with long sentences
International Register of Attention-Seekers
I know a couple of MC's, a DFC, a QGM and a few more MSM's. They're all top humans.
GCMG: God Calls Me God
I can't claim credit though... I think it was the genius that is (was) Yes Minister.
One of my work colleagues was awarded an MBE in the birthday honours. Thoroughly deserved it was too.
The 2 MBEs I've met made me think it stood for Massive Bell End.
WGAF
My old boss got an OBE aged 28 - well deserved for massive efforts in increasing diversity in a really big organisation. He was a total pro at his job too. And he knew how to do plumbing and plastering from his dad's business. And quite nice to boot. Tosser 😉
My granddad got an honour, I think it was a BEM. He quietly did a lot of decent community work.
