I had a lovely chat with Georgiana Osborne, Lord Lieutenant of Angus yesterday, while eldest_OAB receiving his Queens Badge and being made a 'Queens Man'.
Apart from family connections, it got me all interested in how you are appointed to such roles - or are nominated for such honours and roles. I had never realised there were so many honours and so many people recognised.

Mt wife is an officer in the GB and they had their Queens Award presentation on Saturday night.
Out of 27 awards in the entire country she had 6 girls receiving theirs.

I was given "Esquire" by the Queen last year.
I always wanted to be made a Nigerian Chief but as I've aged I've realised that Chieftancy isn't the bed of roses you might think it is; you only get given a Chieftancy if you inherit the title or give away lots of money and it marks you out to be pestered by favour-seekers, beggars and fraudsters for the rest of your life.

I was MRaeS but I don't know if professional accreditations you have to pay to upkeep (and only have by dint of being in the industry a while) count. You can keep these letters if you keep paying us... That was fine whilst work were happy to pay. Then the redundancies started looming...
I used to work with a guy who had an MBE. He added it to his corporate email address and made sure it was in the staff directory. He was a knob.
my ex boss arranged for his wife to get one - well initiated the process that her colleagues progressed. All a bit weird really.
not that close in my family. my grandfather was quite well travelled and a decent expert in his field (organic chemistry, specifically grains & cereals). prior to that it was the usual story of abject rural poverty..
In wider family, closest I think I'd come is my great-uncle - was in charge of the shipyard when they launched the QE2, and also for Britannia - I think he was a CBE in the end. RHS of Liz.

A workmate of mine was a councillor in the town and had business cards with that on for when he was doing councillor stuff.
He was booking a light with BA and just handed over a card for the guy to get some details. Their system couldn't handle councillor so upgraded him to Count Tony H. A great many upgrades followed over the years.

A colleague at work was appointed to the position of Assistant Head of Lower School.
According to his ID tag he was an AssHoLS.

My wife can use QPM after her name if she chooses to* after she was awarded it in the new years honours this year.
She officially received it two weeks ago at Buckingham Palace. I'm not a massive fan of royalty myself but I couldn't help but being massively impressed by the whole occasion (not to mention hugely proud of my wife for what has done to be awarded it)

My step-sister is a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) and as such gets to call herself Dame. If she wants. But she doesn't 🙂

One of my work colleagues was awarded an MBE in the birthday honours. Thoroughly deserved it was too.
The 2 MBEs I've met made me think it stood for Massive Bell End.

My old boss got an OBE aged 28 - well deserved for massive efforts in increasing diversity in a really big organisation. He was a total pro at his job too. And he knew how to do plumbing and plastering from his dad's business. And quite nice to boot. Tosser 😉
My granddad got an honour, I think it was a BEM. He quietly did a lot of decent community work.
