I watched a documentary the other day about US prison gangs and the largest prison gang across the entire US is white power/neo Nazis.

I can't believe that out of the entire prison population of America, the most common 'cause' that they rally behind is the notion that white people are better then black.

I can't believe that out of the entire prison population of America, the most common 'cause' that they rally behind is the notion that white people are better then black.

I reckon it's a great big bit more complicated than that..

Firstly the percentages of ethnic groups in US penal system suggests that white males are very low down in the list..
Secondly, I think there are very strong incentives for frightened young men to be affiliated with a gang whilst they are doing time in US prisons

and thirdly, happily it would indicate that much of the scary backwards redneck pondlife is behind bars where it should be 🙂

Yeah they are all good points.

It just saddens me that the default premise behind the gangs are racially motivated. This obviously doesn't just apply to the white gangs.

I suppose your third point does make it slightly easier to stomach.

In US prisons it's about picking your team (or having it picked for you because of you ethnic background) and sticking with it.

It's quite possible for a white prisoner in a federal prison to be a member of the Aryan brotherhood and not actually be racist at heart or on the outside, it's just practical, to be in a gang - their prisons are like hell on earth - to go it alone will likely mean EVERYONE will be out to get you and take what little you have, by being in a gang you're at least protected from the other gangs to a certain extent.
