Anyone use one they could recommend? I'm not thinking of a phone app but a stand alone machine. I often wake up early and its very quiet so i notice the slightest noise which stops me getting back to sleep. The radio kind of works but i find myself listening to the speaking bits which keeps me awake again!
You can generate white noise on a computer with a program called Audacity. If it's any help?
I like to call mine 'a fan'.
I just have a fan in the bedroom (not someone cheering me on) and that does the trick for me.
Fan noise is a thought certainly. Something that i can just reach over and turn on without fully waking up is whats needed. Does anyone use anything other than fan or white noise such as rain sounds and so on?
It's a phone app but "Make It Rain" is essential for me. Works well, has a timer, and can use the camera flash to simulate lightning if you're using it on the "Storm" preset.
Ewan the dream sheep.
Have you got one? I've read about them being very effective.
Yes, we have one of the mechanical ones that generates the white noise rather than plays a recording. We got it because we moved to Twickenham and were not used to the Heathrow flight path. We no longer use it and I find that earplugs are now sufficient. However, at the time, it was invaluable
Get a Black Noise machine instead. Much, much deeper sleep guaranteed. A lot of nightmares though.
Do NOT get a Brown Noise machine.
I recommend trying ear plugs instead.
Following a thread on here I bought the ones recommend, in over 25 years of working nights I sleep far better than I ever have.
I do use earpplugs (custom made ones) but i tend to take them out during the night without realising it then when i wake up at around 4-5 am its so quiet that i hear the slightest noise so a constant background noise would help to mask that (I think!!).
I'm actually thinking about a Kindle Fire (£49) and an app which seems to be the most cost effective way but doesn't allow to me to just reach out and push a button to turn it on.
More rain noise; couple of plays of this should see you right:
KLF Chillout or Max Richters Sleep albums always work on me!

Did you know Brian Eno thought of the idea for ambient music when bed bound with a broken leg he ask his mrs to swith on the record player, she was in a rush and hoofed out without checking the volume
It was p***ing down against the window against a backdrop of hardly audible music and voila, umpteen million Fripp and Eno, and David Byrne records wre born
Cheap radio , break off antenna, find a non station , instant white noise
. We used this for our newborn a fee w years back.
