Is there anywhere better than the Magpie on the front?

Also any decent real ale pubs nearby?

Thanks in advance

Magpie is crap and only survives due to a the reputation it used to have, the best chippy in Whitby is Mr Chips on the other side of the bidge (just follow the road it's on the left) it is usually voted the best one by the local residents and also offers fish from sustainable sources.

Perfect, that's exactly what I'm looking for.

Ale?

4 of us wlked from Robin Hood's Bay to Whitby a couple of years ago and had great F&C - can't remember where though sorry - it wasn't the Magpie!
Without doubt the best ale pub I've been to in Whitby is the Station, near the er...railway station.
An Aladdin's Cave our obscure beery delights - spent quite a few hour supping away one Saturday afternoon 😛

Not sure about real ale, but our lass tells me theres a vintage tea room with a massive selection of gin called Rusty Shears.

we use to stop off at the Middle Earth pub on the way back to the campsite - nice real ales then (quite a few years back)

Trenchers is the place to go to - the Magpie is cramped and, well, OK. Trenchers you'll get great fish and chips and a seat you can get both arse cheeks on.

...and if you're not full up after the chippy, I can recommend the Humble Pie n Mash

I grew up there. Good calls about Mr Chips being good. The offer a wide variety of fish, too (e.g. monkfish). I'd also recommend the pie and mash shop as well as Fortune's Kippers.

The station inn is a good pub. Lots of good beer and a lot of it is local. The local Spoons is surprisingly good (especially for beer) and isn't particularly rough. Also look at the black horse and little angel.

Mcmoonter and I tried Trenchers when we finished the St Bees to Whitby off road ride last year. Can't say our palate's were particularly discriminating after all the riding but the grub was very nice. If you're doing the ride, there's a shower in the public loos next door.

I used to swear by Trenchers but haven't been in a while. Friend of mine went recently and said it was still good but had gotten expensive.

Mr Chips is the best for us- been going to Whitby for over 20 years and discovered it about 3 years ago and it is excellent, and normally priced. You also don't have to queue for ages. It's not on the sea front but you can then walk up Henrietta Street for a (very good) pint in the Duke Of York at the foot of the 199 steps.

Be wary of The Board Inn next door to the Duke, especially out of season. The locals could drill holes in a stranger's skull with their eyes, and the bands in there are an acquired taste...

I'll add another voice to the "Magpie's not that good" crowd and recommend the Quayside (just up the road) as better.

Quayside and Royal have won awards for their frying the last couple of years so might be worth a look. Trenchers is OK from what the locals tell me although I've never been, Magpie isn't as good as it once was.

Loads of good pubs around, couple of micro breweries have started up too so some are serving locally brewed ale (just cant remember which ones but will ask at work on Friday and let you know if its not too late)

You are all wrong, the best chippy in Whitby is the Riverside on Church St opposite the shipbuilders.

Conveniently, its about 100 yards from a good pub too.

We always go to Trenchers (takeaway) and find it exceptional, but having seen this thread I'll be giving the other side of the river a try next time.

I used to visit Royal Fisheries at the top of Baxtergate most days whist at College in Whitby. It was either that or something from bothems or the butchers for lunch. All the chip shops are pretty tasty though. The locals don't bother with the magpie, that's for the foolish tourists 😉

Pub-wise The Station is a good shout. If you want a true whitby experience though you need to do a pub crawl including gems such as The Star, The Ship Inn, the Fishermans, The Buck Inn, The Black Swan, a few over the other side of the river and see if you can catch karaoke Kris in Rosie's.
