Mate's birthday tomorrow, and he's a bit of a fan, with a tendency towards peaty and smoky, but loads of others too, he has something like 80 bottles on the shelves.

Since I live in Doncaster and there are no specialists near me, and I have to go to Manc for an appointment tomorrow, any fancy offies worth a visit?

I knew I'd miss something, fairly wide, more about getting him something he's not likely to have tried, rather than an everyday tipple or a rarity to sit on the shelf unopened (though he opens and tries everything he has). So £40-80 sort of range.

A further complication, we've switched appointments, I'm now heading to Sheffield, not Manchester, but Mrsmidlife is heading to Manc. Is Aston's a good shop? It popped up on my quick Google and they seem to have a huge range around my price bracket, I've also seen tickets advertised for a whisky festival in the autumn.

Lagavulin 16 is a safe bet for someone with those tastes although he may well already have it in his collection.

Askaig 100% proof. Lovely drop for about £45.

For something a bit different try one of the Japanese whiskeys - Hibiki is around your price point and really nice.

I second going Japanese for something a little different.

Nikka from the barrel is a rather nice dram around £45 for a 50cl bottle so well with budget.

Probably missed the boat here, but I can almost guarantee he won’t have tried this: Amrut Fusion

I’m really into whisky, and this is my current favourite, despite a sizeable collection of single cask bottlings and so on. Highly recommended, not just by me - read the reviews online.

I’m hoping to pick up a couple of bottles tomorrow as I’m on my way back from India.

if he has 80 bottles on the shelf, you should be drinking them not buying him some more!! 🙂
