Thinking of heading to the lakes tomorrow.
Has anyone been to Whinlatter recently? Given the wet weather we've had, what are the conditions like?
many thanks
A couple of weeks ago it was riding great (after lots of rain), though I do noramlly ride in the Chilterns. Snow on the high sections wasn't a problem either. A few unavoidable puddles meant I had cold feet by the end.
I was there yesterday, it was fine, don't think rain is much of an issue as the surface is almost all rock/hardpack. Could get interesting with snow and ice though!
Looking forward to our first visit in 2 weeks time. I've read the Blue is certainly worth a blast.
What are the black sections like? Are they a mixture of skinny logs and one off rock gardens, or a dedicated trail section?
There's a few rocky drop off's, some not very high northshore sections and wooden dropins half way down the South. Blink and you could miss any of them 😉 None are what you would call a true black but all are optional.

Amazingly enough for me I did first the Red north then the Red south and then the Blue all in not much more than around 3 hours.
Yes, the blue is great fun but my legs were a tad too tired to really blast around it. I thought the red north descent was the best albeit a tad scary for me and I did come off on that tight steep S bend bit. But I was very impressed with the trail building and it compares well with my local Stanes trails.
Mostly well drained rock surface, there's a few places under the trees that retain puddles for weeks, but only snow and ice really stops play. Bring your super tackies if you have them, its always slippy 🙂
I was there on sunday. perfect weather. cold on chest at first but soon warmed to about 3 deg. Did both reds at decent pace, very slippy on maxis high roller front and panracer xc on rear (lots of roots) but great fun. dont usually like trail centres but really enjoyed it. had massive grin on face driving home.
It's my local and great to have so close by. Definitely go for all three loops if you can, they all have their own goods bits. I usually start on the Blue, then do the South loop and finish on the North loop.
There's not really any Black sections or any walk board sections though. Couple of bits at the very start of the North loop and that's about it.
Have a good one 🙂
Sounds good, although looking at the long range forecast I half expect snow and it will be pretty chilly in our camping pod! Trusty Mud X's will get some use.
