Am going to have to spend a weekend on my lonesome in either Boston or Washington (US, not Lincolnshire and Tyne & Wear!) and don't know much, or anything about either location!
So, the question is, if you had to spend a weekend in either, which would it be and why?
Thanks!
Boston.
Boston
Boston - nice compact little city.
Never been to Washington, but assume it must be shut at the weekends.
Boston Boston Boston!
Washington is a shithole.
STW in reaching a concensus shocker! 🙂
Thanks, all!
Now, what do I need to see/do in Boston?
Now, what do I need to see/do in Boston?
1. Go to the Cheers pub - not the one in the square, but the real one that inspired the show (near the park).
2. Marvel at the enormously expensive brownstone houses.
3. Take in some history - stuff to do with Paul Revere and the tea party
4. Watch sport
5. Hire car and drive to Cape Cod
6. Drink Guinness - plenty of that around..!
North End
Harvard Square
Spent a weekend in Boston earlier this year. Spent a few nights in Washington about 25-30 years ago.
Boston, as described above, is a very nice compact city. With limited time, we just followed "The freedom trail", basically a red line on the ground that guides you past all the sights of historical significance.
I don't remember too much about Washington (I was a kid at the time), other than the obvious sights/monuments/etc, BUT one memory that has really stuck with me was a trip to the Air and Space museum, well worth a visit.
Oh yes, head to Cambridge (get on the T - the boston metro) and drink margheritas in the Border Cafe - so salty..!
Stroll around Harvard.
Eat Clam Chowder and drink beer, wouldn't bother leaving the city if only there for a weekend, I must admit I was underwhelmed by cape cod.
Be careful not to leave your heart there, mind.
You really couldn't go wrong with either; Boston is probably the most 'European' of the big US cities, but you won't be short of things to do in Washington - the museums, White House, Capitol Hill, etc., etc are well worth visiting.
Flip a coin!
Boston things to do;
- Relax on Boston common
- Explore the Freedom Trail; http://www.thefreedomtrail.org/index.html
- Climb Bunker Hill tower
- Eat at Quincy Market, I've never seen so much delicious looking food in one place; http://www.faneuilhallmarketplace.com/
- Photo outside of Cheers pub (apparently it's a let down inside*)
- See the Harvard and MIT campuseseses
- Oh and of course, ride a bike; http://www.bostontours.us/?event=offer.type&productType=BICYCLE&mpt=438
I'm sure there's more... 🙂
*Although unless Ted Danson, Woody Harrelson and a still-slim Kirsty Alley were there it would be a let down...
DC has lots of American history stuff which is cool, and the White House, which is a bit underwhelming really.
Personally, I'd hire a car, and drive out of one of the cities to the countryside. US cities are cool, but unless you've spent a lot of time in redneck places already, there is something pretty awesome and special about back country USA towns. DC is surrounded by gun toting redneck type places, and some pretty big national park places, which I found pretty cool in a bizarre foreign way. Boston I don't know, but obviously you are near the sea there, and it might be a bit more up-market so to speak.
Maybe that is me being odd though, I have a thing for US places that aren't cities much more so than the cities.
Washington will be way too hot at this time of year also if that helps make a choice.

I used to have to travel to Tennessee quite often, so seen my fair share of redneck activity! Always love the fact that on a Sunday, you can't buy beer, but you can buy armor (sic) piercing ammo and hardcore pron!
Thanks for all the great info, folks, the ever impressive STW HiveMind delivers once more!
Looks like everyone goes to Boston . . .
Washington it is then.
I spent a couple of days there, interesting museums, Capitol building, all the monuments, plenty to see, also Georgetown over the river is nice for an afternoon and there's the cemetery!
I've spent a fair few weekends in DC, (the Garden Hilton is quite cheap at weekends) and there ain't much to do apart from look at museums. The art is good, admittedly. There's some magnificent imperial architecture, too. I found it hard to find somewhere decent to eat at the weekend downtown, too.
Boston - on the strength of a single weekend there - it's cooler and more human and more enjoyable.
