It's for taking pics while snorkelling, so perfect optical quality is not essential, but it DOES have to be 100% idiot-proof to avoid accidentally getting water in.

Olympus Tough range which I think TG-4 is the latest incarnation.

Ive had the original Tough and now have the TG-2 and they were both excellent!

My wonderful other half brought me a TG-4 for Christmas. I must say, I am stunned by how good it is for a waterproof tough 'compact' camera. It's versatile, has numerous manual settings, the auto is good, it has the most amazing super-macro and isn't that big considering the waterproof+shockproof stats. I have had previous 'waterproof' and 'shockproof' camera experience and found focus was poor, they weren't that shock proof and the output quality iffy.

Another vote for the Olympics TG. I have the TG1 and love it. A friend has just shown me her pics of whale sharks when snorkeling taken with her TG3. She is very happy!

Instead of one of the waterproof cameras I bought a 2nd hand Fuji F100 and it's waterproof case (good down to 40m) for about £100 via Ebay. I used it snorkelling and diving in the Red Sea and was very impressed with the results.

This would have been about 15m down while diving:

And these were when snorkelling:

I have been using a Fuji XP80 on my last couple of holidays and it worked fine for snorkelling, diving and water slides. My son is only qualified to dive to 12m, so hasn't really been below that, although the camera is rated to 15m. If I get chance later I will upload some pics from it.
