Old Toshiba TV has packed in, lasted 8 years 😥

I'm on a budget and have found these two:

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-dvd-blu-ray/televisions/large-screen-tvs-32-and-over/samsung-ue39f5500-smart-39-led-tv-21311358-pdt.html

It's a good price for both TV's from what i can find.

Main issue is the TV can't be wider than 900mm (thanks to the wife insisting on a stupid choice in furniture) so 39" is the biggest we can go with.

Out of those two any preferrence ?

Can't really go wrong with a Samsung.

The 5500 is a decent TV

See if you can stretch to the 6500 though which is also 3D.

There is not a huge amount of 3D content at the moment but it will increase in the future so you might as well get 3D ready TV if you are buying a new one

I wouldn't count on it. The BBC have decided not to bother with 3D TV for the next few years. Most broadcasters still make major sacrifices because not everyone has widescreen, so it will be a long while until 3D is a necessary. We'll be looking at 4k by then.

6500 is a tad too much, be a squeeze size wise too.

I wouldn't bother with a 3D TV either, it's pretty crap and there's very little content either. In the price range you're looking at I'd go with the Samsung, although I'd check if John Lewis sold it as well as they'll price match and you get 5 years warranty

I'm not really fussed about 3D, it seems to be a thing that comes with all half decent TV's now.

I have just upgraded our TV to a 42" smart LG TV (42LN575V), we used to have a 32" Samsung that was about 5 years old. I am very pleased with the new LG, unsurprisingly much better than the 5 year old one. The picture is good and the smart stuff works well.

Worth buying from John Lewis for the 5 year warranty, although I bought from Richer Sounds as with their 5 year warranty it came to the same price anyway.

I can sell you a Tosh of that size if you're within stomping distance of East Lancs. 18 months old, barely used.

Sorry, didn't look at the links; mine's a 32" if that's any use to you.

3D=Gimmick as stated previously BBC are no longer bothering with it,Sky only have 1 channel with it(endless repeats)
And as a Sky engineer visiting countless homes each week the general consensus is its a novelty for a week or 2 then the specs just sit gathering dust.

Samsung, decent enough picture but seem to be the most unreliable brand out there judging from what I see on a daily basis.

My money would go on a Panasonic, this one is decent for the money

Plus according to reviews the Screen panel used on this is better than the one used on the 3D models.

I looked at the panasonic.

I noticed it doesn't have any picture enhancement. Is that good/bad ?

Seen a few faulty Samsungs, and their picture processing seems to be poor to me. Panasonics good, but I also think the new Sony's have good pictures, although maybe Panasonics are more reliable.

For me I wanted a TV with "Smart" capabilities. I went with Samsung 40" F6320 from Richer Sounds. Got wi-fi, iPlayer, 4OD, Netflix etc... so far so good

I didn't faff about for ages comparing screen quality etc in the shop. Just went for it

Now I maybe wrong in this assumption, but TVs, tablets and phones are all converging. They all have an operating system that runs apps, but TVs lag slightly in that side of things. I went with Samsung as they're a big player in phones and tablets, so betting on them for being good with future support and app availability.

That said if TVs are like phones then it'll be only a few years before the apps and other "smart" stuff are not longer supported on my new TV. At which point I'll probably get a "smart" set top box or Sky plus or similar

No but time is precious, so prioritise as best I can. Rather spend more time on bikes than TVs, and more time riding bikes than choosing a bike...
