Is it practical and/or desirable to watch TV and movies on a tablet in a domestic setting?  If so, which tab?  I have Amazon Prime, in addition to which I'd use iPlayer, ITV player etc.

Our family TV is monopolized by two squabbling children for videogame use in the evenings. Don't want to buy a  second TV as that will go for video game use as well and I'll be no further forward.

With the caveat that they've got fortnight and minecraft for tablets too now.

I'd go for a cheap, branded Android device of a size you like for simple use like that. SD card makes it easier to watch films if you don't to stream everything (which of course assumes you have a computers to transfer them, which begs the question...)

Personally I'd get another TV, they're pennies these days and lay down the law, or you'll just have two kids fighting who gets the TV and who gets the tablet.

Oh and whilst I find tablets fine for a bit, I wouldn't want to hold it for hours - Laptops Direct have got some nice 14" i3 based referbed laptops for £200-£300 with 1080 screens, might be a better bet, don't give the kids a log-in and it makes it easier to get through the usual asking 20 times thing.

Do you like reading?

I haven't used all that many at all but I'm happy watching my Amazon Kindle fire HD. I mostly use it for Netflix and You Tube. Cheap and cheerful, the only negative is a somewhat limited Amazon app store.

Another vote for Kindle Fire.

Fire HD10 of the newer tech?

I've watched far less than I thought I would, but when I do, my Nexus 7 2013 gives a very decent picture and sound from streaming.

Fire HD10 ordered.  It looks perfect and if I don't use it so much I wont have broken the bank.

I think you can open it up to the full google app store easily enough.

I have abtab 2 its not great for watching films.

I mean its totally fine from a watching point of view but you have to hold it thats just daft if you intentionally want it for watching.

For the last few years I've pretty much just used my tablet with head phones for watching stuff and for pretty much the same reasons as the OP.... plus the fact that the wife watches soaps and murder programs.

Id go for an android tablet as you can pretty much watch anything that's available on them.

The other thing to look at is the aspect ratio. Most tablets are 4:3 now and will drastically reduce the viewable screen size. I'm still in the process of trying to find a good tablet with a 16:9 ratio but these seem to be unavailable these days. I plumped for the Samsung galaxy S2 as it has the best screen imo.
