Looking to buy a set of hex wrenches that will last on the basis that buying cheap normally means buying twice. Can anyone give some guidance on quality and its realation to price. I have looked at:
ParkTool PH1 P-handled Wrench Set currently £41.10 from JE James Park tools
Sealey Ball-End Hex Key Set 8pc T-Handle Metric £21.59 Sealey
Will I better off with the more expensive ones? Are the cheaper ones made of cheese? Or are there any other suggestions?
Bondhus are nice and great value eg http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0006O4AEM/ref=s9_dcacsd_bhz_bw_c_x_1
Either PB swiss or Wera will see you right for years of use, shouldn't be more than £20ish
These Wera are good, the colour coding is quite handy for recognition of sizes
Personally I'm after the holy grail of hex wrenches like those but with different coloured handles to easily tell them apart (you can get coloured hex L wrenches but I'm after the nice handle)
Park price is a piss take!
Have some Wera ones that are good but the smallest guage ones aren't that useful cos the sleeves on them mean the useable length is reduced.
Bondhus are decent and can be had for cheap
My Ice Tools set has been great.
Park price is a piss take!
+1 Anyone who pays that for Park hex keys must be mad.
Dazzled by the blue bullsh*t.
I bought a set of Bahco keys from Amazon a while back from about £12...
I've also got a set of Bondhus which I've had for 20+ years.
Park price is a piss take!
Park are stupid expensive for average quality at best when it comes to non bike specific tools like hex keys and screwdrivers.
Some of their bike specific tools are a little pricey but at least the quality of them seems good.
Always been very pleased with Teng Tools, never had a problem with anything I've bought.
If you're using them purely for your bike, you'll never generate enough torque to knacker a half decent set, so no need to go crazy.

Whatever you go for definitely go for some with p/t handles - i only bought a cheap set, but they're an absolute joy to use compared to standard ones.
Threads like this give me tool envy... 🙁
Halfrauds do some decent ones
halfords-professional-9-piece-ball-end-hex-key-set
Thanks, will have a look at them all later!
Seems Park is overpriced according to the STW hive and that handles are the way to go!
Bondhus
Bonghus are good. Teng make great tools but their p and t handles never seemed like good value. Who actually makes the Park ones again? It's someone pretty good- maybe Wera? But they're indistinguished and expensive, some folks would buy a poo if it was dipped in blue plastic.
I might get hanged for this, but mine are Draper Expert, and they are very good. Excellent fit, durable, very comfy. Nature of the beast with Draper Expert, some of it is absolute junk but there's some stuff randomly at the other end of the bellcurve. I got another set more recently for the car, they're not as good 🙁
I use some facom ball ended ones, seen a good ten years now with lots of abuse and no slippage, it's the 'made of cheese bolts' that give up first. I would definitely buy again, also used koken and signet stuff which is good value for money
Aside; anyone know what these are called, and where I could get more?
I got a set at a motorbike show about 15 years ago, they are blimmin awesome. They were probably amtools or similiar, one of those meaningless brands...
Have some Wera ones that are good but the smallest guage ones aren't that useful cos the sleeves on them mean the useable length is reduced.
Trim the plastic sleeve with a blade. I'd it's a bit close to the writing then trim the angle and and slide it up, assuming g it moves easily and is not bonded.
PB Swiss have the prettiest colour coding.
Bondhus are nice and great value eg http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0006O4AEM/ref=s9_dcacsd_bhz_bw_c_x_1
I have a set that is one of oldest tools and probably most used and at well over 20+ years still going strong.
Bondhus +1
I've got a set of Pedros L type which are ball ended and extra long for those awkward jobs. Really good quality and £20.

Pro tip- if you buy a nice set of black allen keys, throw out every other black allen key first. Otherwise you will instantly get them mixed up. I just gave up and ordered 2 sets of the silver bondhuses.
The colour coded Wera ones are excellent for £20
Pretty much anything from this page;
http://www.onlyqualitytools.com/catalog/Hex_Keys_L-Keys.html
Bahco, or a mini wrench Pro set from Halfords at half price.
Trim the plastic sleeve with a blade. I'd it's a bit close to the writing then trim the angle and and slide it up, assuming g it moves easily and is not bonded.
This occurred to me shortly after I posted 🙂
There's something else about the Were ones that escapes me ATM - maybe something to do with the shape or poss. there's a size "missing" that means I can't use them to undo the necessary on the top of a lefty...
My T handled hex keys are Teng as well, I really like them
The Halfords stuff is good value too, and easy to replace - just walk in with the broken bit and walk out with a new one
Pretty sure the Park ones are made by Bondhus - obviously not worth paying the RRP for but they're not crap quality
Bondhus, Wera, Britool, Wiha have servec me well over the years.
Wera Stainless Steel
Ice Tools here too.
I'm tempted by this; https://www.merlincycles.com/silca-hx-one-home-and-travel-essential-kit-87469.html
Facom. Had a set for 20 odd years which got some hammer when I was an actual mechanic. Still perfect. (the keys, not me)
Another vote for Teng. I've had a set for 10 years which are used regularly on my motorbike and they are still in perfect condition.
Bondhus T handles.
northwind, not double ended but these just came up on my ebay suggestions for some reason: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6-pc-Draper-Expert-Metric-Hexagon-amp-Ball-End-Hexagon-Key-Set-w-Swivel-Heads-TOOL-/201556511133?&_trksid=p2056016.l4276
I have two sets of Facom. Best I have ever used.
I also have some £12 Bahco ones from Amazon, they too are pretty good.
Not had Wera hex wrenches, but I have their screwdrivers and am not too impressed with steel hardness.
Ooh ta andyl. The double-end is really handy tbh but those look interesting
I can't believe the Unior T-Handles haven't been mentioned yet! I have these in the workshop along with VAR P-handles and the Park set that I hate and regret getting!
The torque needed for cycling use shouldn't present too much of an issue. But ones with handles will make life easier. Spent 25 on a t handle sealey set that worked well on motorbike but lacked reach. Picked up a set from aldi for a tenner that have been surprisingly robust despite lots of ham fisted treatment over three years on bike and motorbike.
These look very similar (comes with torx too) but could not vouch got these specific ones
similar ones
Hey Northwind, I stumbled across these last night;
http://primetools.co.uk/product/bondhus-sp10-ic-20-pivot-head-torx-key-wrench-set-t15-t55/
They have torx sets too and they are Bondhus......... 🙂
Personally I have these (all in the Facom roller cab 😉 );

Tempted by a set of Bondhus L keys though and the Teng stuff I have is great so this looks fantastic value;

Thanks for all the suggestions.......in the end I went for these:
Hex keys at Uk tool centre.
Seemed to get great reviews and good enough for non-intense use. Cheers
Cant go wrong with hex plus.
To the guy suggesting aldi keys up there i bought a set and took them back when i found out they didnt actually fit the advertised size. So much slop. They will undo the bolts but they are horrendously slack in even new unused hex bolt heads i tried another set in the shop then decided it wasnt worth the risk even as a spare set to throw in the van. Hex keys aint exactly pricy. Got a 12 quid set of bahcos instead - they at least fit the same bolts.
Squib, I just got a 7 piece set of unior hex keys from amazon, came today, unbelievable quality and they were on sale for £23. I couldnt believe it. Superb quality. So good in fact I am selling my Beta ones.
I have loads of Unior bike tools (hand tools are all Facom).
Unior is easily as good quality as Park. Big company too, they have their own foundry.
I'll probably get sworn at but I picked up a silverline set a few year's back for less than a tenner, happy with them, long, ball end on the long ends, think 10pcs iirc.
Unior as good as park.......**** offf...
Unior would get my money long before park. Much better gear imo of actually using it to make a living.
Infact i rate most of fat spanners stuff above parks over priced pish. Park make one or two innovative tools but they have been trading on their reputation for a long time. Alot of our old park tools went on for years - most of it rebranded quality kit - such as bondhaus etc such as snap on do for tools they dont make.
We replaced the, with more modern park gear which didnt last the year in the workshop. It was absolutely different equipment, nothing like the old stuff.
Unior would get my money long before park.
😀
Can't disagree, but a lot of people see park as the standard when it comes to bike tools. Pedros are even worse!
I do still own some park stuff, their wheel jig is better than uniors and they have a square drive BB tool.
I've got a park cable cutter which I like. But apart from that it's mostly snap on and knipex.

Pretty sure they are the same as Ice Tools, XTools, Superstar, etc and perfectly up to the job for many years. Mine are Ice Tools branded.
However this damn thread has made me spend money on those Draper swivel head ones (ebay £17.99) should arrive today, so will post what they're like.
Those Draper ones are sweet, if I didnt get the Unior ones I defo would have got those. Ive got a bit of an tool buying problem at the minute though.
Where is the niche? STW fail....
https://www.imprex.net/product-category/titanium/titanium-ball-hex-key/
Titanium ones for the win (if not the actual using)
I have the Superstar T handle one for £20 they are great and have a handy stand for the work shop
As posted above - Bondhus.
They make Park Tools hex/torch/Allen keys for Park. Plus, I recently'imported' a full set of torch/imperial/metric folding wrenches for about £18.50 all in from the US, roughly the same price as a single Park Torx folding set (exactly the same item) costs in the UK.
are you 100% sure of that , or do park now make various quality ranges - and ergo devaluing their good stuff....
i have a set of bondhaus park stuff from way back when in my tool box. its a mile away from the modern park in terms of quality.
are you 100% sure of that
I wouldn't bet my life on it but having it in hand, I can see and feel that the green Torx set is nigh on identical. I read it in a magazine article a while back also.
Doesn't surprise me st all that Park sub out at least some of their production lines
