For a trip to Norway I need to show that I have search and rescue insurance. My annual travel insurance does not cover it, so I need to get a standalone policy. Any recommendations, or factors I have overlooked? The one that comes up on Google is Snowcard but I've read mixed reviews.
Interesting. I thought that Norway had free S&R.
Having said which, for my ice climbing last month I used snowcard
Have a look at Austrian Alpine Club uk branch membership- the insurance that comes with membership is pretty comprehensive and folks that have had to use it report very good service.
When I've needed specific higher level of cover it's always been snowcard or dogtag.
Not used either recently or tested the cover.
BMC insurance is good, but expensive. You also need to be a member. It was for many years the default for climbing and MTB, but other layers entered the market.
AAC Warning?

I'm with 'Insure and Go'. As they were the cheapest for two trips in a year with mountain bikes. Can't comment on the service if you need to use them though.
Have used Big Cat travel insurance for a few group trips to the Alps - good value, paid up quickly on claims and have decent S & R cover and repatriation if needed
The BMC cover works if you do need it. I know 2 people who were unfortunate enough to have big accidents in the Alps and BMC sorted all the rescue, hospitals, relative coming out to hospital, repatriation, etc. with no hassle on their side.

Careful with their wording. You aren't covered above certain altitudes and the wording on 'activity holiday' is vague. We took an AAC policy out to add to Insure and Go for a trip we did to the Dolomites as we weren't covered by them for search and rescue.
AAC seem to have changed their wording since that BMC incident and it does say you must try and call them first, if possible. Obviously not ideal…
Big cat insurance does NOT cover any cost related to search!
