Personal preference for me is Garmin...
Have a look at the speedview free app for your phone. Its a good hud on the windscreen at night too...

I've recently bought a garmin. Does everything you ask of and I can't fault it.

just got a garmin nuvi 50 at halfords for 60quid very impressed so far

with lifetime updates I think they are 100

more convenient than using your phone and the speedo is quite useful too

Install copilot on your phone. ~£20, does everything you need.

Fix your speedo, it's an MOT failure (and also illegal IIRC).

Garmin Nuvi here also. Was a godsend towing the caravan round Paris a few weeks ago.
Our maps are two years old now but wasn't a problem.

Most towns/cities are still roughly in the same place. 🙂

Would not recommend a Tom Tom, my next slap nab will be a Garmin.

Tom Tom is very buggy, constantly sends me messages for me to update and then won't update from their web site. Tripe.

I've not managed to update my TomTom in the 3 years I've had it, and I've worked in IT for 20 years. Then again I dislike Garmin due to their rip-off bike GPS computers so wouldn't give them my cash either. If you've got a decent new smartphone I'd just use that and buy a dedicated mount etc.

Just for balance I have TomTom on my iPhone and it works very well both in the UK and France.
Updates virtually every month via App Store. Haven't noticed any bugs recently.
Traffic updates work very well too.

NAVIGON or Becker - far better than Garmin and Tom Tom (I may have said this before a few times)..

i've gone with Tomtom for years now, only problem i've had with being buggy was after i repeatedly dropped the thing! The new one i got for xmas is superb, intuitive to use, good mapping and good instructions. i think they do an option for lifetime updates of maps now too, but i imagine its not cheap.

Bonus also for me is i can create and upload all of our sites as POI's which makes planning far easier than hunting down postcodes.

I admit though, the new updating software is a bit poo...
