Which low/mid range phones have the best camera? I have been impressed with the hawed p20 lite but it seems to have mixed reviews. So, what is better? Low light, close up and video.

Not the Moto G5.

I am gutted with the camera on it to be honest. I'm sure it's more a software thing than a hardware thing but my old Moto G3 was so much better.

This one gives you a blacked out portion at the bottom of the screen where the shutter button is, so if you're trying to do anything creative where the focus is not in the main central portion, you can't tap to focus on the blacked out portion.

It also doesn't seem to focus as closely as the G3. I could do really nice almost macro shots with the G3, not so the G5.

Panoramas are the worst thing EVER!!! Straight away in that mode it cuts away a quarter of the screen (panos shot in a portrait sweep), it generally doesn't work very well anyway, but worst of all is you cannot seem to have the option of viewing them in all their glory as a , you know,...PANORAMA!... Instead, you get that hideous affair where it zooms in to a screen sized section of the panorama and you can pan about within it. Horrible.

Don't get a G5.

Sorry, I started to go off on one a bit then.

I've got a Samsung A3 (2017) and the camera is really pretty good.

It's the exact same camera as the 2016 A3 so it's perhaps not the latest tech, but then it is a 200 quid phone.

Low light performance isn't amazing but then I'd be surprised to see anything that is amazing in a phone...

I got a Motorola G5s and the camera is great.

However, if you want real photographs (so to speak) use a real camera with proper glass.

+1 for SONY. My z5 compact has an excellent camera. Rarely use by DSLR now.

https://www.gsmarena.com/

These sites do detailed camera comparisons, and most tech site phone reviews will at least have a few example shots from the phone and competitors.

I think generally an older high end phone will have a much better camera than the latest low/mid range ones as the tech doesn't change at the same pace as processor speeds and screens have. So if the camera is your main concern I'd recommend going for a used/refurbished flagship from 2-3 years ago.

Undoubtedly rose tinted (since I've checked and it was only a 2 megapixel camera, although IIRC it did have a little Zeiss lens) but I often yearn for my old Nokia n70 when taking pictures with my phone.

I like the camera on my Moto 5+, panoramas work well & have taken plenty of pics I am happy with.

huawei are releasing a phone that done a long exposure then tidies up and sharpens the image, pretty impressive form what I have seen online.
