My laptop has died and I have no idea about anything computery. It was quite old so anything will be an improvement, but is there an amazing deal out there that is just too good to be missed? I'll really only be using it for pretty basic stuff like surfing the net and emails so it doesn't have to be fantastic for gaming as I'll never use it for that. Budget is around the £300 mark and it must be new not second hand or re-conditioned. Any ideas?
Something made by HP... brilliant laptops in my opinion.
Had an Acer Timeline x for a year or so. i3 3 GB Ram 320GB HDD. Use it for same stuff as you, its great. Also had HP ones. Both brands seem to make decent units at that kind of price....maybe £350.
Had an Asus which fell apart in months. Never again.
Just do loads of research and read loads of reviews...you won't go far wrong.
Bouht an Asus something or other x53e (off the top of my head) in January, £400 supposedly down from £650, I5 processor, 500GB HD, 4GB RAM etc. however I WOULD NOT buy it again, I need to get round to warrantying it as the charger insert socket is loose and it's an absolute pain to get charging, i.e. 1 minute to get the charger to charge properly and then you have to keep it deadly still to keep it charging. Not impressed. Been like this and progressively worse for 4 months, going to back it up on Sunday and take it back to Comet this week.
Have a look at the "Refurbished Laptops" on Currys / PC World website. Usually some good bargins to be had. Got an HP last year with rrp of £500+ for under £350 without a mark on it.
Acer, Toshiba have been great laptops with good reliable performance. My previous HP was a disaster and their customer service has made sure I never purchased anything from them again.
Our oldest laptop, Fujitsu Siemens, not great performance, feels cheap and nasty too. It has been dropped a few times but still refuses to die.
I'm in exactly the same boat.

I briefly went into PC World today to look at some, I didn't ask for any help as I was short on time but I sort of worked out that 350 will get me a very good laptop and the HPs look pretty nice.
Just read your thread Bucko-weird how we can ask exactly the same question at the same time. Maybe I'll take a trip to Currys. Just hope the sales staff don't baffle me for ages with their best sales pitch because they'd be wasting their time with someone as un- knowledgable as me.
Another Acer user here - very happy with mine
This seems ok for the price http://item.mobileweb.ebay.co.uk/viewitem;PdsSession=2c72e8da13a0a5aa46939323fff96a2b?itemId=180987836451&cmd=VIDESC
Or have a look on the Dell Outlet some good bargains on there http://outlet.euro.dell.com/Online/InventorySearch.aspx?brandId=7&c=uk&cs=ukdfh1&l=en&s=dfh
Got the daughter a touch screen laptop off there, should have been £400 but we paid £200 because it had been marked in manufacture. When it arrived it took us a good 30minutes to find this supposed mark. Iirc the marks can only be in the outer casing, screen, keyboard, touchpad area are all perfect. Depends how bothered you are about a possible mark.
As an aside they come with no backup discs, which seems par for the course these days and you have to make your own when first setting it up. However I rang them up on the off chance I could get a proper copy and they sent me the discs for free.
Ebuyer have just advertised a nice Acer for £30
