You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Morning folks. I’m beginning to do some trail running around the Peak District and wondering what GPS mapping device would be most appropriate.
I use an ELEMNT bolt for my riding activities but would like something with OS Mapping capabilities. I use a Garmin forerunner for logging the activities so just want something to help find my way.
Theres a whole load of unexplored footpaths out there! Garmin etrex series? Anything else? Don’t really want to rely on my phone.
Ive have an etrex 20 with OS 50k maps....the screen is small & browsing the map is very slow. Personally i use my phone and use the OS app with digital versions of the 25k maps (I just buy the real map & use the digital code to get permanent maps on my devices). The etrex is my last resort backup & records my route as a gpx (for strava etc)
I use the OS maps on my garmin 1000.
The device is a bit bulky on my wrist, but I ain’t buying another device when what I have is more than good enough.
If you arent already then make sure you are savvy with a map and compass. Digital ways of route finding are fine but they can let you down when you need them most. Having a map and compass as a backup (and knowing how to use them) is important.
Satmap, expensive but really well thought through. - more intuitive in use than Garmin and with better map reproduction and faster scrolling etc. Or possibly Viewranger on a smartphone in a waterproof case with a battery back-up.
The problem with mapping GPS units generally for running rather than walking is that realistically you need to stop to read them properly in a similar way to mountain biking. Trying to read one properly on the move is a good way of ending up on your face in a puddle.
Hmmmmm, decided I’ll make do with my phone and put the money towards one of those battery pack cases. Cheers guys
