you do need to have FM hardware in your device to receive FM radio over the air and so most apps are hardware specific (i.e. come as part of the OS build)

TuneIn is a good radio app for when you have a data connection.

Apparently my phone (S7 edge) has the functionality. No app as standard as far as I can see though..

Get NextRadio from the Play Store, try that.

Also, what @Stoner said.

Recognise also that the phones I've seen up to now that have FM have also required that you use the earphones as they need that as the antenna.  Don't know if yours is the same but it might be worth checking

A bit more digging and it looks like the European S7 edge has a different chipset that doesn't support FM radio. US version does.

Ah well, never mind. Thanks for the replies.

I use TuneIn radio when I have WiFi connection, just wanted FM radio for when I'm pottering about in the garden.

It's a bit of a scam to get you to use more data.

The US based S8 have a FM radio chip but not the European ones.

It’s a bit of a scam to get you to use more data.

Considering how much data you can get with a fairly cheap PAYG or contract, it isn’t a scam. FM is bloody awful, signal strength is woefully inadequate anywhere outside of any major conurbation, and will fade out given any opportunity. Even with a 5Gb monthly allowance you’re unlikely to use up all of it using a networked radio app. Plus you get access to a far, far wider range of international stations along with digital-only stations like 6Music.

Really?!  I've never had any issues listening to FM in my car over the last 30 or so years so I think FM coverage is pretty good!

DAB in the car often switches back to FM...

"In a car" and "on a phone" are two totally different situations.

I live outside of any major conurbation and my FM signal is way better than the mobile signal.

5GB a month is a fairly hefty data package. Probably cost about £5 per month extra over 1GB package?

If you don't think £60 per year to listen to the radio that most of us have already paid for anyway, is a lot than fair enough. I do.

Also, by the time you have done anything else with it, your 5GB will soon be gone.

Like I said, it's a way of getting you to use more data, hence more profit for the network providers who are very closely linked to the phone manufacturers.

If I didn't get my phone provided by my employer, I wouldn't have much more than an old Nokia.

The whole "smartphone" industry is a scam. When did it become acceptable to send £700 on a phone?

Just buy a FM radio from Argos for a fiver?

http://www.argos.co.uk/product/6314862

That would be seem a reasonable solution.

Just how far do you drive? Before DAB became available, driving to Bath, which is 12 miles away, I’d lose the FM signal halfway to Corsham, which is five miles away, and not regain a signal until I got into the centre of Bath. For the last two years I’ve driven possibly 100,000 miles, mostly in and out of Cornwall, but across to London, Norfolk, South Wales and up as far as Liverpool, in a wide range of cars and vans, and DAB has proved to be far superior to FM, in many cars FM was unlistenable, the signal disappearing for minutes at a time, only coming back for a minute or so, in one car I drove in silence for over two hours because the car was FM only with no phone input. The six year old Kenwood DAB unit in my car, with a magnetic antenna, gets a signal everywhere I go, with only the very occasional drop-out, lasting no more than a minute or so, usually less. Oddly enough, Mercedes seem to have the worst DAB performance, most other fitted units have been fine.

I guess my experience must be unusual, though...

@CountZero

I drive plenty and all over the UK and have never really had any issues with losing an FM signal.  My current car (bought about 2 years ago) has DAB so until then I was always listening to FM.  I live oop North (near Leeds) but have driven pretty much everywhere and never noticed a problem.  I thought RDS sorted FM re-tune issues by always selecting the strongest signal.
