Well, it's a question I ponder whilst having a relaxing poo for sure. I was hoping for Scotland or Wales as they are localish but no, they will fry just like the rest of us in England.
Some are a bit of a trek but for us in the UK we need to be thinking of Iceland.
I know some forum members are in luck though and can sit in their garden having a cold one as the rest of us incinerate. Lucky sods.😁

I think you and I have a very different view of "luck"
To quote way of the gun "it's not about how long you're going to live, it's about how slow you're going to die"
Iceland for instance would be rubbish. If you avoided the fallout, there was no fire storm and no nuclear winter you'd just starve since there's sod all there. There's a reason they eat three year old rotten poisonous shark and its not because it sells to tourists.

Well duh! Anyone who's seen that recent Gerald Butler film knows that!

Bah! Go and get your mullett cut!
We might be burnt to a crisp but we do so with the dignity of a decent short back and sides!
Portugal is at the most extreme end of Europe..
Not read the report. Honestly funny care.

Speak for yourself. I suspect we need a new hair survey thread, the lockdown one no longer applies although my hair seems to be in the spirit of of it sans clippers.
I cant help but laugh at all those people who have bought former missile silos, that they've turned into homes and the like.
Chances are those are still on the Russia/China strike list 😆

Maaaaate, if I cut me mullet i'll burn me neck!

Given Russia's recent record I think that's probably the safest option then.
Could always take a leaf out of Brad Heaseman's book anyway:
Welcome to Perth’ sign owner reveals staggering cost behind prank
The jokester behind a ‘Welcome to Perth’ sign – painted on a rooftop in Sydney – has revealed just how much money went into the prank.
^^ Oh, now that's beautifully evil/ funny.😁
West of Ireland. We have the sea to keep you burning zombies at bay.
Yeah Naaah don't bother coming down here, nothing for anyone.
Yeah, here in NZ we like our ionising radiation delivered slowly, hence our world-leading skin cancer rates.
I'd sooner move as close to Faslane as possible, get it over with quickly. Don't fancy living out the road scenario.
The world is too heavily populated for anywhere to be considered safe.
Didn’t someone try this in the 1930’s, try to figure out where to best ride out the impending global conflict (no nukes then, so different parameters).
after extensive research they decided the small out of the way island of Iwo Jima would be safe.
Didn't hear about Iwo Jima, but a UK family decided to move to a small group of British islands in the South Atlantic to avoid a nuclear winter. They arrived in the Falklands not long before Argentina invaded.
Switzerland... Why would anyone nuke where all the money is stored?
I was going to suggest going more into the forest near where I am now, but if there is a nuclear strike, Sweden _will_ get hit quickly and I'm going to be toast
I would head to Cruachan tunnels initially, then out to some of the inner Hebrides.
George Lucas thought Cruachan was some kind of star-base...

I don't want to survive a nuclear war. Frazzle me as quickly as possible.
Frazzle me as quickly as possible.
Mmmmmm frazzles

I did watch some Sci-Fi movie once where the chaps on the space station were the only ones left after a nuclear war back on earth.
They survived for a while.
Good luck you flaming galahs!
Neville Shute's On The Beach is a handbook on how to deal with the ever encroaching fallout as it gets closer to Australia, and how to deal with the madness that will ensue as people realise their impending horrible deaths. 😀
(Less Mad Max leather and guns, and more G&T and infidelity.)
The other downside of survival is you know everyone on STW is going to be piggy don't you?

When the Ukraine war first kicked off I saw a simulation that had the warmest place on Earth during the depths of a 1-4 year nuclear winter being a toasty -70°C. If that's the case I'll probably use the 4 minute warning to drive down to the gates of Leuchars army base. On the other hand I distinctly remember a TV program about humans being shit to the environment and they interviewed a Cree elder who said the famous line, "only when the last tree has been cut, when the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will the white man realise he cannot eat money". He also had a map of where would survive the end of the 4th great cycle and Scotland was one of the safe places, so I don't know what to believe.
When you think about it you realise you have no impact whatsoever on the disaster happening or your chance of surviving it.
So logically you should just live for today, and possibly the weekend.
So, sod paying taxes for a future you wont enjoy, fire up the Wood burner, drive to far off trail centres in your fossil burring fast car and fly off to as many holidays as you can till your credit card stops working.
I reckon we need a 'hide thread' option on the forum to get rid of threads like this for those of us who have enough difficulty even glancing at the news nevermind seeing thread titles like this.

No shortage of nuclear facilies in both countries to go on the wonk in the event of being left unattended - the ones in Wales aren't even operational anymore but theres still 80 odd years worth of decommissioning work to do on them before they could safely be left alone.
Heard an interesting interview with the author of Survival of the Richest - about the escape fantacies of billionaires. The drive to build knob shaped rockets is symptomatic of billionaires being paranoid of society collapsing around them and they all seem to dwell on having to 'get away' and seem to see Space / Mars / The Moon as somewhere to flee to (and pull up the ladder behind them of course) - But what was interesting was the sort of minor league billionaires he met - people who were very rich, but not build space programmes rich - and they're obsessed with where abouts on earth you could flee to when it all turns sour.
Theres also a really interesting podcast by 99percentinvisable about developers buying up cold war era bunkers and selling them as luxury apocolypse mansions to the super rich.
Switzerland… Why would anyone nuke where all the money is stored?
Theres actually a really interesting element to that podcast about which countries build bunkers for their populations and which dont. Switzerland - a non nuclear power - has built bunkers for more than their own population - if your family had to run to the shelters and had guests staying with you there would be room for them too. America - a country more than equipped to destroy the world - only ever made provision for certain key government employees ..... but not their families. A lot of the survivalist / prepper cult in the US is largely made up of ex-govenerment employees who simply have insight into how little care, preparation or priority the state has made for it citizens. Not just for war but for anything - they're just acutely aware the population would just be left to fend for itself and the government is only equipped to defend itself and its own interests and not the population.
Cheerful bunch..
more G&T and infidelity
I dont think I can manage any more of either
The drive to build knob shaped rockets is
Was there any discussion on the psychology of people who see a rocket shape as a knob shape? Do they lick Rocket lollies with a juvenile giggle? 😀
Neville Shute’s On The Beach
One of my mum’s favourites. I’ve read it but can’t remember anything about it!

Rocket lollies are shaped like rockets. Bozo's rocket isnt shaped like a rocket lolly - its shaped like a knob.

The thing is that everyone involved in actually planning this stuff back in the 50s 60s and 70s seems to have agreed on two things (a) that the ones above ground are the lucky ones. (b) there's no such thing as a limited strike/nuclear war in practice.
There's nothing to come back to, you're staying down there until the food, water or air run out and all the while you get to watch the world and everyone in it, including those you loved, vanish.
Above ground if you were very "lucky" you might have to put up with a week or two post impact but you won't be about for long.
Outside of a limited strike the bunkers aren't there to ensure the survival of those employees in some sort of magic long term repopulate the earth manner, they're there to ensure someone can still launch the nuclear arsenal.

You'd get a good view of the fireworks from up there.
Then you'd realise that you no longer had a Ground Control or any hope of resupply or escape...
Think I'd prefer the instant vapourisation option.
There's an old nuclear bunker here...

...might give you a bit of cover!
One here too...

Fk all that. Seriously. I haven't watched the film, heard about it and, just .. no. 'The Road' was enough. Film somehow managed to be bleaker than the book.

Ah, one billionaire then. And Dr Evil, of course.
I watched Dr Strangelove for giggles last night.
If it happens I want to be outside near the blast.
I remember seeing a documentary about the RAFs V-Bombers during the Cuban missile crisis. The crews that were interviewed all said that they would have carried out their orders, but were split on what to do afterwards. They knew they would have absolutely nothing to come back to, so after dropping their bombs, some favoured flying as far east as possible until the fuel ran out and hopefully making a new life in Kazakhstan or Mongolia. Others said that they would simply turn off the oxygen, depressurise the cockpit and kill themselves with asphyxiation.
(Less Mad Max leather and guns, and more G&T and infidelity.)
There isn't any infidelity in the original Nevill Shute book. Lots of gin and brandy though.
It is quite good read even though it shows very 50s culture - women will take care of mundane housekeeeping things while men go to war.
To actual question, I hope the nuclear winter will bring more more snow as the skiing conditions have been rather weak this year. By the way, what is best ski wax for radioactive snow and is the fluorocarbon ban still in position after apocalypse

That gets touched on in Team Tornado, the book by John Nichols and John Peters (the Tornado crew shot down and captured during the first Gulf War).
Most of their training was preparing for armageddon - the Tornado fighters had to get out and shoot down as many of the onslaught of Russian bombers as possible, the Tornado bombers had to get through to retaliate. They knew there'd be nothing left to come back to.
Ah I reckon Palomares in Spain would be good, they've already had nukes accidentally dropped on it in '66 so whats the odds of getting nuked twice 🙂
I'm vaguely intrigued to see how far P. will go before falling out a dodgy Kremlin window, I think there's a lot of oligarchs who would be unhappy to have their playground spoilt after getting all the toys, cruising around the med on your super yacht wouldn't be so super if it was a sea of toxic sludge.

Yeah, as I typed it I was questioning myself.
The least populated place I can find. Lest my rage at stupid people means I make an early start on bringing the population numbers down.
Remember how everyone acted when they thought they might not have paper to wipe their arses?
Survivors will probably starve to death reasonably quickly, or lack of hydration.
Much as I like living, having watched 'The Day After' I'm not sure that I'd want to see the aftermath.
Somewhere in the southern hemisphere.
Meh I've had a good innings. Nothing interesting has happened since the 90's anyway. I suppose the ketamine/minimal techno thing in the mid noughties was mildly amusing for a while.
I remember being worried about this as a kid when we watched When the Wind Blows.
My mum cheerfully said not to - we live near to Northolt, and even closer to a fairly big army base. If the first wave of missiles don't get us, the second certainly will.

What a wonderful species we've evolved into.

That quaint film was pretty grim thou.

(it’s funny thou how people sort of forget that behind the scenes we still have the nasty toys skulking in the darkness and the threat never really went away and we’ve been living with it for all our lives and Ukraine is an uneasy reminder of this to a generation who haven’t really had to think about it before.)
its going to be tight on a four minute warning, but the landlord has agreed that it will be pour your own, there is break glass cabinet on the wall with Marlboro Reds and Hamlet....
pour your own pint, get out the front and look in the right direction.... bonus points for lighting your final smoke from the blast, before your face melts off.
friends went to check out Madiera recently, but declared it so boringly middle class, they'd rather fry.
Grew up in the 80s - there nowt wrong with hiding behind the back of your settee - it will be fine the government have told us so - or a cupboard, hide in a cupboard.

Indiana Jones survived a nuclear blast by hiding in a fridge. But that has shades of Boris Johnson about it. And also, that film was shit anyway.
🤷🏻♂️

This sounds ideal 🙂
We'll be fine, we'll have our umbrellas.
