I've got 4 days in August to take my 10 year old daughter away for a short break.
Which European capital city would you recommend? (And what would you do while you're there?)

Needs to have direct flights from Edinburgh.

Thanks!

Madrid is great for kids (does a 10 year old girl still think she's a kid?) but maybe not in August though. It'll be a bit hot.

We went to Paris when our son was around that age, he loved it. Did lots of walking and sight seeing, eiffel tower in the evening and a hot dog after was great, meal on the Champs-Élysées, boat trip etc.

But yeh if it's hot it can be a hard work, we went to Barcelona in August, you couldn't walk far.

York might be better 🙂

Copenhagen looked really great for a 10 year old. We visited last year and thought it was a shame we didn't bring the kids when they were that age.

Although Paris is great too

London. 😉

Am being serious, too!

Museums, galleries, parks, boat trips, etc.

Does she like history? Berlin is incredible, but maybe for more 'mature' tastes than a normal 10 year old, unless she is especially interested in history.

In which case, Paris, like London, is fantastic with innumerable possibilities for walking, exploring, and other, more tourist-y, things.

There are a lot of nice cities in Europe, with lots of cultural interest, but I'd choose London (esp in August) it's just jam packed with stuff a 10 year old would find exciting, too much to list.

Lisbon. Like Paris but without the crowds. Take a Tuk Tuk tour. Everyone is so friendly.

Paris smells of urine and there's a child kidnapping problem in tourist hotspots, not to mention pickpockets and terrorism. We are going next week for the end of the Tour.

It's got to be London or somewhere cool like Copenhagen at this time of year. Amsterdam is a fantastic city for families too, easy to move around and on a small enough scale that you can see most by foot or on bikes or boats.

Venice isn't a capital but I liked it a lot. Different, especially when it floods

I'll second Lisbon. Jnr was a touch older - 13 when we went, he loved it. We did go to watch a football match while we were there though. We took him to Paris and Amsterdam the same year, he enjoyed all three but Lisbon was his favourite.

He really likes Barcelona too (again a football bias though).

London. Took my 10 year old to Madrid a couple of weeks ago. I don't think she was that fussed. It will be scorchio in august, though to be fair there's shops & restaurants a plenty to get out of the sun.
