I like timmy taylors landlord and fullers ESB.What other similar beers would you recommend ( not keen on the strong heavy style beers). If available bottled even better.

I was pleasantly surprised with Sainsbury's own 'Kentish Ale'. Hoppier and lighter than a Spitfire, and cheaper, if only by a few pence.
The Kentish Ale is brewed for Sainsbury's by Shepherd and Neame.

I'm sure this is not the super secret revelation that you were after but its the best one I have tried in the last few weeks. Still tastes good after 9 of them (messy weekend at an outdoor music event in the lovely Alton last weekend).

I generally try a couple of the Morrisons discounted ones when they're on, but I keep going back to Brewdog Punk IPA.

Fraoch and Arran Blonde are nice bottles though.

I'll give another nod for that Caesar Augustus as well. Lovely stuff. Not usually a fan of Scottish beer, for some reason, but Williams stuff is ace.

Edric 64 - semantics as to whether it's a pale beer, lager or both. There are lagers and ales on this thread. Definitely a quality drink but differences in taste are never going to be objectively resolved.

More of a cider man myself.

Have you a suggestion for the OP?

"I drink beer or cider so im never going to be a lager convert"

On Mendip, like you I tend to do local ciders or ales as they are really good.

I never sup that pish we dare to call lager in the UK. British served lager is to continental beer, what British keg bitter is to Real Ale: horrible tasting filth in a glass.

Lager beers, including Weissbeers, from Bavaria are gorgeous. I have Gutmann Weissbeer in my paw just now in-fact. Veltins is a reasonably good continental helles-style lager. Try it!

Newcastle Brown has not been the same since they moved it to Tadcaster. FiL gave me four bottles at Christmas, still got 2 of them.

some of my favourites:

Thornbridge Jaipur
Theakston's Old Peculier
Theakston's Lightfoot
Wychwood Hobgoblin
Wychwood Wychcraft
Thwaites Tavern Porter
Fullers London Porter
Saltaire Raspberry Blonde
Saltaire Triple Chocoholic Stout
Saltaire Cascade Pale Ale (well they are my local brewery!)
Fullers Black Cab London Stout
Blackout (NYMoors brewery?) Porter
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
Thwaites Wainwright
Moorhouses Pendle Witches Brew
Old Speckled Hen (but I have the recipe so I brew my own version! Same for Old Peculier & Hobgoblin)

when in France: Pelforth Brune
when in Ireland - well there's not really much choice TBH (where I go): Guinness or, er, can't remember the name, but it's a bit like John Smiths and no, it's not Caffreys

can't remember the name, but it's a bit like John Smiths and no, it's not Caffreys

You'd be meaning Smithwicks
[img] [/img]

It's a bit pish compared to what we have here in terms of ales, but it's not as bad as Caffreys (I don't think anyway). I always have a few when I go back. It's bizarre really, for a country that spends so much of its time on the piss, you'd think they'd have a better selection of beers. It's a bit better than it used to be, but I can remember pubs outside town with only Guinness, Smithwicks and Harp, maybe Carlsberg/Heineken on draft, and bottles of Bulmers (AKA Magners) for the summer. Shite selection.

aye, that's the one 🙂

I'm often up in Co Leitrim, where it literally is Smithwicks, Guinness, cider or lager. Might pop into Tesco when I'm there next (week after next) & see what bottles they have

That Mikkeller had me drooling, have had two other versions of it but not the calvados. I think 'To, From, Via' is my favourite of his to date

Currently very much enjoying bottles from Brewdog, Brewfist, Mikkeller and Flying Dog. Got some Two Ol to dig into at some point but trying to cut back on the beer a bit as part of a fitness drive

On the real ale side Ilkleys 'Siberia' Rhubard Saison is currently working for me, and some 6.7% Smoked Porter with Chipotle I homebrewed 🙂

Torpedo has a kick, another vote for Thornbridge Jaipur or Kipling, if you like the US type IPAs then try and track down racer 5 or rogue brutal ipa, sublime. Not cheap though rogue is nearly £10 a pint bottle. Utobeer in borough mkt have a fine selection at the mo.

Mikkeler, Racer 5, Thornbridge, Rogue, Flying Dog?

All available at my local! 🙂

You must have missed the Monk's Elixir with Cranberries. Words fail me.

BTW, who was it wearing a t-shirt from 18 Bikes outside Cask the other day, eh? Must have been someone from here!

a light spicy-banana nose, with perhaps some hints of spongecake or light fruitcake. A banana sponge cake, perhaps? It was juicy and distinctive in the mouth, with the characteristic banana hints, with a mildly spicy but not at all dry finish.

20x500ml bottles for 15.50 Euros [woman not included]. Winner!

Just opened a bottle of Infinity IPA from Coniston Brewery...proper lovely beer. It's just gone into my top 5 and you can get 3 bottles for £6 direct from Coniston which isn't too bad in my book.

Had a couple of new ones at the weekend, Brewfist Spaceman & Bureaucracy IPA which was very good (Italians can make beer), a smoked ale from De Molen which was not to my taste, in fact it was hideous. A summer wine brewery diablo, which was very good too but we ended the evening with a big bottle of Punk IPA, nothing came close, such a great session beer.

There's always Deuchars IPA. Or Ossian from the Inveralmond Brewery, Yellowhammer from the Black Isle Brewery... I'm a big fan also of Cantillon Gueuze, which is a spontaneously fermented beer with a very unique, quite acidic taste.

Just go out and buy some you like the sound of. If its good you know to have it again, if its bad, dont have it again. Personal tastes are so different when it comes to ale that it would be impossible to recommend any, as what i like you might not like.

Just venture forth and experiment!

I normally drink Deuchars IPA on draught but had some bottled Williams Scottish Joker IPA at a pal's two weeks ago and would recommend it. I prefer bottled to canned beer any day.

Mmmm Beer.

Special mention to Adnams Sole Star - remarkably good for a 2.7% which makes it very lunchtime friendly

Otherwise I've mostly been enjoying:
Adnams Lighthouse and Ghost Ship
Woodfordes Wherry and Nelsons Revenge
Marstons Double Drop and Single Malt
Sharpes Doom Bar
Badger Blandford Fly
Thwaites Wainwright
