My wife has been playing Zelda BotW and can now handle basic combat, to an extent, but she doesn't want it to be the focus of a game. Assassin's Creed appeals but there are so many - are there any sequels that are light on combat, or where you can avoid it or its not the main focus?
Or indeed any other game along those lines? We're on PS4.
Start with 2 and go on from there, including the side story ones. They are all great, vary atmospheric and have engaging story lines.
2, Revelations and 3 are the best in the series imo.
Last of us also comes to mind for PS4.
Dishounoured? can play combat or totally stealth style if you want. More fun to play that way and leave your weapons for a last resort if you get becked into a corner.
Dishonored/Dishonored 2 +1
The Paris one and the pirate one for AC. Not syndicate (although it's very pretty), and the other modern ones are very grindy for levelling up etc.
Latest one is supposed to be good and reduced on Tesco’s I believe.
I really enjoyed Black Flag. Arrrr.
Assassin's Creed Tesco? Parkour over those shelves and sneak past the fish counter queue for steath deli action, bonus points if you find the hidden Costa.
Black Flag 100%, it has relatively little po-faced Templars based guff and loads of fun silly buccaneering...... Yaaaaaarrr
Witcher3 is superb on the story, character, immersion side. One of the best open world games ever from that perspective. It's much lighter in terms of complex gameplay but that sounds like it's the order of the day? Combat quite similar to Zelda BotW, slick and fun but very straightforward.
In some of the later ones you can go on tour of the area with no enemies to bother you.
Assassins Creed Tesco is fine but Morrisons is full of Templars, best to climb up on the roof and hit the trolley boy with a berserker blade
I got Odyssey for Christmas... Always a year behind. But its great. Black Flag is also good.
But I'd also second Witcher 3. Really good!
I'm playing valhalla and it's got me back into gaming after a long break due to it being so good.
I've not played the later ones (past Origins) but,
I'd suggest Syndicate. It's beautiful, it's set in the UK so is recognisable if you know London at all, and it's IMHO one of the most accessible AC games in years if ever. You've got a choice of switching between two protagonists (outside of plot missions where you're given one or the other for that set piece), Jacob is fighty and sister Evie is stealthy. The game is full of humour with J & E constantly riffing off each other, there's a loose RPG-style upgrade system which is simple because by the end of the game you've maxed out everything so really you're just choosing what you get first, and as you go on you recruit your titular 'syndicate' to help out so eventually you can have your mob do all your murdering for you. Oh, and the control quirks of some earlier games (like randomly leaping sideways off the top of a tower cos your stick was 2' off central) have gone.
I've had the most fun with the AC2 trilogy and AC3. But for a My First Assassin's Creed it surely has to be Syndicate.
Oh, and avoid the original unless she turns into a completist, it's tediousAF. It was a release title for the 360 and it shows, it hasn't aged well.
Also,
Consider the Tomb Raider reboot.
Shadow of Mordor?
Combat quite like AC. But I prefer it. Very satisfying as once you get the hang of the controls any number of orcs are no problem. Just the captains etc take a bit of planning. Great fun.
PSA for RPG fans with PS Plus
2 x full games to download this month:
- Shadow of the Tombraider
- Greedfall
Greedfall is more in the vein of games like Witcher or Assassin’s Creed

I've played most of the ACs, currently on Origins. I'd say Black Flag is probably the best - a good mix of all play styles.
Origins is good, though as you progress getting a little same-y - more RPG than before. As someone else, the later on you get, less Abstergo tosh in the story, to the point that it's barely mentioned (at least, up to the point I have reached) any more.
Edit: -
Consider the Tomb Raider reboot.
Oh, and this.
Random leftfield suggestion, 'death stranding', is superb.
The best game I've played in 10 years, no questions. I can see how it's a bit marmite for some people, but for me, it's an absolute masterpiece.
BotW on Switch? Does it have to be PS4 then?
If not I'd thoroughly recommend Zelda:Links Awakening, re-release of the GameBoy original. Awesome game and a really well crafted transfer to console.
Ok I'll take a look at Black Flag, this month's PS Plus, and the Zelda one.
If she's playing Black Flag (and it wouldn't be my first choice TBH) then pro tip: get the companion app installed on a mobile device. Once you get to the part where you start commanding fleets about for trading you can use the app to manage then out-of-game. It's a considerably faster way of making serious cash.
I have a real soft spot for the Ezio games of AC. Running around Florence, Venice and Rome was a bit special and beautifully rendered.
Yeah, it was AC2 which pulled me in to the franchise.
I had the original and got bored. Played AC2 on holiday one day as they had an Xbox with a sprawling choice of about 3 games in the house, and was hooked.
