Need a new phone. What's the best bang for buck at the moment? I can spare maybe £300.

I'm thinking a second hand recent flagship type job, Android, and not Samsung (current phone is a budget Samsung that was fine for a while but suffering from all the proprietary bloatware). Maybe a OnePlus 6?

Has anyone bought a 2nd hand phone from a reseller (like Envirofone)? Would rather go to a reputable place rather than ebay...

Over the years I've bought 5 phones from these people and they have all been mint , even the ones labelled as Good.

Either Moto G7 or Sony XZ*

G7 is new to the household, but it rips along and has pretty good camera. And currently £215.

My XZ1 is waterproof, good battery and camera, and a year in still works smoothly without issue. Also available new for £250ish. Just feels and works like a class product.

Both on pie.

I would vote for OnePlus 6 or even 5T for the right price. I currently have an OP 6T and loving it. Previous years I was using value friendly Xiaomi devices, for under £200 new, and they were perfect for the money. But for £300 I think last year's OnePlus is the best choice. From my experience, never liked Samsung, Sony and HTC I had used to be decent but non existent now days

For £300, Galaxy S7 is pretty solid. 2 year warranty. I think S8 or 9 would be over budget.

I bought a Moto G7plus a few weeks ago and it's been a delight. For a couple of hundred quid there's not much to complain about.

My mam has the G6, and although hardly a power user, she has had zero complaints

I got my hauwei p20 pro from mobilephonesdirect and they have some great deals so don't rule out a contract rather than sim only.

Mine cost me £32 per month which is £768 over 2 years and at that point the phone sim free was £700. After taking off what I was paying sim only at the time, it worked out to the phone costing me about £300.

Had a G6plus It's okay. Battery could be better.

Going to try a Honor Play for bigger screen and better battery life. (169 Argos refurb) 279 normally.

That's a step away from vanilla android.

Also Honor is metal backed. Hate this glass back trend.

I've just got a refurbed Google Pixel 3. Phone is amazing, especially the camera. Looks brand new, came in proper box, with headphones etc. Has a 12 month warranty (I think)

Paid £85 up front, and have a 24 month £30 contract.

From www.mobiles.co.uk

Pretty happy with it!

Either Moto G7 or Sony XZ*

As above, even though I'm on a G6 as a work phone (astonishing value for money, IMHO) and a bells and whistles 2 or 3 year old Xperia as my personal phone (better camera, faster overall and longer battery life)

Yep Honor Play is very
good. A little larger than I wanted but the spec is so good it was hard too resist. Powerful CPU, battery lasts for ages and no stupid glass back. The only weakness is the mediocre camera.

Honor 8X. I just bagged one for £169 from AO although they're back up now. Amazing value, it makes Samsung look very expensive.

I got an Honor 8x too, it's amazing for the cash. I had a Pixel 2 XL before that and the only thing not as good is the camera, The honor has a bigger screen aswell, and the battery life, well I don't know how they do it it's insane, I had a Xiaomi with a 4000mah battery and it didn't last anywhere near as long.

Eldest_oab has the Honor 8, now 2 years in.
It's a good solid phone, and it's not let him down. Good camera.
But.
You can't really get rid of the extra layer of apps and the way it looks. It's just not as smooth an experience to use as the household G6, G7 or my XZ1.
Screen cracked relatively easily a year in - it fell off car dash onto carpet!
XZ1 and G7 also have Pie, which does seem good and again more 'pure' android - plus I've dumped the Sony apps.

+1 pocophone. Basically same spec as the pixel 3, but poorer screen. + Points - plastic back not glass, headphone jack, SD card slot. Very pleased with it.

Had too many problems with new phones to buy secondhand.

Just for balance/YMMV etc:

OTOH, have only ever bought/been given used phones, and never had a problem with any hardware that I didnt cause myself. Really can't understand the mad money thrown at phones and contracts, especially in such a trend-dictating/throwaway/ugrade-driven market.

For contrast: I just this week 'lost' my old iphone 5 (in a bizarre tyre-puncture/Halfords incident still under investigation) so just checked local FB marketplace replaced it with a legit, mint, used 32GB SE for £70 cash. Boxed, all accessories still unopened/unused. They were upgrading to a 7. All in it cost us much less even than the 5 it has replaced (which was to be fair refurbished and warrantied) Also, I pay my network £1 a month for services including 1gb data. As if roof, food, cars and bikes (and inner tubes) don't cost enough without something as daft and ubiquitous as a phone finishing us off into permanent debt. Just buy from reputable place with warranty, or if private sale learn how to spot a wrong-un vs good-un/buy from trusted friends/neighbours/referrals etc.

looking at the pocophone - the reviews mention the UI is a bit weird and sometimes annoying - has anyone experienced that?

And where do you find one for £240??

I paid just shy of 300 for 6gb/128 from e buyer, so UK warranty etc. They 'can' be had for less if you're proud to go the very import route.
After updates there's really very little to get irked about wrt the interface. I was a bit wary as I'd planned to put a rom on it, but after that became too much like hard work I just stuck with it as standard, and I was pleasantly surprised having likely read much the same reports you have. Not much between this and the g5 it's replaced, and much to like, actually.

The smart money would probably be a second hand iPhone. Change my mind.

CEX charge top $ for their iPhones but you do get a two year warranty, although what this is worth I'm not sure.

oh why is it all so complicated 😆

I tried to buy an STWer's Oneplus 6T but he had already sold it.

Then I was about to buy a new Pocophone until I saw this (and plenty more like it) and was very roundly put off - https://www.theverge.com/2018/9/19/17877970/xiaomi-ads-settings-menu-android-phones

I've been Android since my first HTC Desire about 10 years ago but have just switched over to an iPhone.

Admittedly I didn't get the best deal as I bought a new 6S (could have saved a lot going second hand) but bearing in mind it's a 3.5 year old phone it's excellent. It runs brilliantly and really does just work. My other half always has iPhones, never the latest ones, and after 2+ years are always still running well. My previous Android phones were unlikely to make it much past a year without some kind of issue, and were worthless to resell.

I never thought I'd see the day that I swapped.

Are you me? Same except I bought a S/H 6s for £280 a year ago, after my S7 Edge just past it's 2nd birthday passed away peacefully as I slept. Took advantage of the £25 battery swap (another advantage for Apple, their stores, which are a bit odd imo) and I'm happy. Never really understood the it just works mantra, because my HTC's, Samsungs and Nexus phones all just worked, except they just worked because I made them just work, never really took it on board that this wasn't the norm all round.

I note the article says that Samsung do similar. There are no ads in my settings menu and I use pulsar as a music player ( pocophone user )

I bought a 2nd hand 7plus from GiffGaff for £300 & traded in my old 6plus for £100. It’s significantly better than my old phone.

Maybe I've been unlucky with new phones going wrong. Has seemed to be getting more frequent in recent years with Nexus and Nokia handsets for sure though.

yeah i'm currently a Samsung user and while there are no 'ads' as such, every day i have to dismiss notifications to try their amazing Samsung Cloud, close the full-screen Samsung Pay app which I have never used and cannot seem to disable, etc etc. This is one of the things that's pushing me away from Samsung...!

Not sure why people insist on fastest processors when the majority of the time this will mean more battery usage. For me and I suspect a lot of people, battery power is pretty important. I purposely avoided the latest and greatest as I dont play games on phones, so didnt need the fastest CPU. OK, camera speed and quality may improve with better CPU, but after some research last year, I bought a Nokia 7+ for £175, almost new. Battery last for 2 days (3800 mah). Camera is excellent.

OnePlus 6 from CEX for me. Happy so far, significantly cheaper than buying new flagship phone and has a heaphone jack :D.

Only downside was that CEX's idea of 'Dispatched' means "We printed a label" my idea would be "Has left the building" the two can be several days apart.

Huawei deal with this by having aggressive battery management, which works incredibly well. I'm on 88% now despite using it a fair bit today.

You just have to greenlight your fave apps such as Strava to prevent issues.

in the end i bought a OnePlus 6T from Envirofone for £330. Absolutely immaculate condition, bit of a shame that it doesn't have a headphone socket but seems very good otherwise so far 🙂

My contract's up in 5 or 6 weeks so thought I'd dip in for some tips, and there's a bunch of words in here I don't understand.

I'm so old. 🙁

I just picked up a pixel 3a from Carphone Warehouse to upgrade from my pixel 1. £400 and they throw in a £200 laptop you can flog for about £150, so the price is right.

Been getting great reviews.
