My daughter does a lot of photography (mainly local bands) and has decided she needs a new body. She's decided on a Nikon D610 as it seems good for the low-light stuff she does (she knows far more about this than I do) and has seen them in London Camera Exchange for about a grand including battery grip (you could buy a bike for that 😯 )

Is there anywhere else reputable she should be looking?

Edit - she's already got a Nikon and most of her lenses are compatible apparently

If you're happy (probably) dodging import tax then places like Panamoz/DigitalRev/OneStopDigital are likely to be quite a lot cheaper than anywhere in the UK. I think Panamoz are supposed to have a UK office in Brighton but my mate went to check it out and it was just a house with no sign of any business being based there!

Look at www.camerapricebuster.co.uk
They generally keep up to date on current pricing.
Or how about you/she goes to your local camera shop and discusses with them her requirements.

Photospecialist.co.uk is my first choice.

For a bricks and mortar Nikon retail experience try Grays of Westminster ?

As grum says. I got mine via import for £50 cheaper than anywhere else in UK (Sony a6000).

£1000 for a d610 is way over the odds (depending on the value of bundles accessories/ extended warranties etc), £740-£780 would be what I'd expect to pay for the body.

As a Sony fan boy the a7 bodies are worth a look too - Sony make Nikon's sensors so are generally better value and have the advantage of being mirrorless - much smaller, lighter and can use practically any other lens with an adapter.

Expedite Electronics - importer but with a UK warehouse and returns to UK address. Got a d7200 through them no bother.

Am assuming she has FX rather than DX lenses - that's the reason I kept to the D7200.

Camera Price Buster

^^^ Plus One

Looks like the battery-grip is a Nikon offer, so you could get that anywhere.

you could buy a bike for that

FWIW - apart from specifications - there comes a point in camera ranges where manufacturers shift from all plastic bodies to full/part magnesium bodies.
(D610 = part magnesium)

As it appears you’re in the South – Park Cameras in West Sussex is also worth considering.

Worth reading the reviews herePark Cameras Nikon D610

I wouldn't buy a camera as an import because of warranty issues. I'd look on amazon (any and all in europe) first.

We've had good service from MBP
Their new price is competitive as well, they'll do part-ex, and all by courier if that's what you want

I recently bought a camera (Sony Rx100mk3)

Jessops was my first try but once I'd decided on a camera they then lead me to the cases and I felt they were making me buy one then the warranty sale etc. I know they need to sell stuff but it was like they were trying too hard. I walked out with nothing.

Next place was Wilkinson Cameras. Altogether much less sales presssure and zvfar more pleasant experience. I left with a medium expensive camera, a case and extended warranty and felt great. Doubt I'd have felt that way if I'd spent my money in Jessops.

I think its important to feel a camera before buying. Etc,

I recently bought from DigitalRev. Very happy with the experience except for FedEx trying to send a bill after the fact for some sort of import duty. DR themselves were great and vary fast shipping.

You could buy 2nd hand, I sold a D4 body on a FB Camera group earlier this year (to a pro wedding photographer).

Your local camera shop if they are competitively priced. Should you come in to problems and need warranty repairs they will fight for you and do all the work (if they are a specialist dealer). Well worth that relationship.

If not I would personally buy from Grays too. Had a couple expensive lenses their and their after sales support (for warranty stuff) is amazing - they genuinely want to help.

I recently decided to upgrade my SLR body as it's 8 years old.

After all the looking around I went with Panamoz and spent a lot of time researching them. While they do grey imports they offer a 3 year warranty and it seems they use UK repairers and refund the money. Better than LCE who I bought my first camera from and I had a nightmare when the lens had an intermittent fault.

Even so they are so much cheaper that having to pay for what would be a warranty repair still makes them cheaper.

There are lots of positive experiences on DPreview which swayed me into the £400 odd saving.

I'm out of the loop these days but a fast lense always used to be better for low light than the body itself.

Not so much of an issue with modern cameras giving good results at iso12800. Unless you specialise in black cats in coal mines...
