Hopefully not a repeat post as it didn't show up last time...

Old uni mate up for the weekend and we've designated Saturady as the old gits Leo Sayer. We'll start early and hopefully finish late.

Looking for places that serve good beer and we can sit, chat, drink and maybe eat at some point. We can put up with some hipster nonsense if the beer is right.

City Arms, Briton's, Angel, Marble Arch (for food if still good?) and Castle Hotel all on the list as is Cloudwater.

Bit of random entertainment as well maybe? Think we'll give axe throwing a miss though!

Not sure if any or all of these places have re-opened or some may have fallne by the wayside - its been a long time since I've been out! Any 'should not miss places opned up'?

Ta

I think you'll be reet with all the places you've mentioned. I don't know how long it is since you've been to the Britons but they've now got a really nice beer garden if the suns out, which they did up fairly recently, so that'd probably be your best pace to start. You've the Pev round the corner as well

Port Street Beer house is a good pub and there are lots of places to eat over that side of town but you'll need to book for food - if you want pizza and beers Ply and  Tariff & Dale are good.

Port Street Beer House +1

I know some people rave about Beermoth but I've never been.

These have a tap room, they sell homemade beautiful lager and play some cracking funky tunes!

Another option could be The Refuge where they have an outdoor terrace.

The Deansgate is good. NQ bars great if expensive.

If you do end up in NQ or Ancoats worth going to Seven Brothers. Mackie Mayor is good for food choice as well.

Bookmarking as me and the missus are having a couple of nights away in Manchester for the first time in about 18 years...staying over in the NQ, any suggestions for good places to eat on a weekday evening, outdoors if possible would be great as well.

The following are more in the new bit of Ancoats that is part of NQ.

Canto is excellent but like most places doesn't have much in the way of outside tables. Mana if you want Michelin stars.

Rudy's pizza is really good. The Jane Eyre for pints and nibbles

Pollen bakery is amazing for breakfast, coffee etc (they supply a lot of the posh restaurants)

If you are in the Marble Arch and fancy some entertainment - book a batting net at Base Bar for half an hour. Good fun and the beer isn’t bad either 👍

Ok, thought I'd report back!

Had a great day of it, managed the Leo sayer bit, albeit keeping to the weaker beers! Beagle, wondered why you were recommending a cricket session but get it now! next time!

The Castle was a dissappointment, only 5 draught beers now and three of them were Robinsons! Gullivers opposite was one to forget! The Angel had some great beers, spoiled only by the fat lass ecigging the place into a fog! Marble Arch beers were as good as ever. We 'stumbled' across the Wheatsheaf in the NQ, the pub that time forgot...

Gutted that we missed the Union tap room but enough others that we missed to warrant a repeat soon! Briton's, City Arms and Crown and Kettle all worth a visit.

Oyster Bar, dirty great big Tudor building in the centre of town. Proper pub at sensible prices.

Briton's is great for whisk(e)y, none finer outside of Scotland / London. Ask them for the menu.

For next time:
Smithfield Market Tavern (the best)
Port Street (a few painfully self-entitled types, no fighting!)
The Brink (Manc music and great beer)
Marble Arch (bit of a walk or Uber it)
City Arms (a bit gloomy and not so cheap)

Additional suggestions for next time.

Cafe Beermoth. Large place so can have a fair few in without feeling overcrowded. Plenty of large tables for groups.
Tom's Chop House
Sam's Chop House, both chop houses are close together, do food and good beer. Tom's also has a beer garden area in St. Anne's Sq.
Pevril of the Peak (short walk from The Briton's)
The Old Wellington, in Shambles sq next to oyster bar
Bar Fringe. up on the inner ring road on the edge of NQ & Ancoats, near to the Crown and Kettle
Vine Inn, next to City Arms. This is the one that our office tends to visit on lunch time visits

Rudy’s pizza is really good.

If you like pizza (who doesn't?), Rudy's is a must. Best I've had in the UK.

Sam's chop house has closed. Becoming another bar.

Pen and Pencil good (NQ), Pie and Ale for food beer (NQ), Pawn till Dusk for cocktails (Stephenson Square) and Wash House near Arndale (pre book cocktail bar, expensive but brill) It looks like a laundrette outside. Arcane good on Sth King St.

Thought it was the Albert Square Chop house that closed to become a generic bar. Sam's and Tom's are still going.
