Off to the Alps at the end of next month and we're looking at somewhere to camp around about half way down (say 300 miles from Calais). Any suggestions?
We'd be getting there for the afternoon so ideally it'd be somewhere to wander around, buy some nice grub setup the tents and just chill before completing the journey to Morzine the following day.
Forget it, just keep on driving and get there.
If you really feel the need to stop, Macon is nice.
Drive overnight. Job done in one shot, nice'n'easy!
I don't have a problem driving there in one go, did it in January to get to Alp D'Huez from South Wales. With this trip there's a gang of us going one of whom is in a van so it's going to be slow going hence the stop over.
We often stay at a nice municipal campsite near Chalons.
It's only about 3 miles from the autoroute so not far out of the way. There's a great on-site restaurant which does a mean omlette frites and bottle of wine. Then grab a tasty pastry from the boulangerie on your way back to the autoroute the following morning!
Even bought a cracking bottle of local champagne from the campsite shop when we stopped there on the way back from Switzerland last year. Only in France!
