Looking at booking a couple of nights in The Peak District. We've stayed at Losehill House in the past, which is a mile or so outside Hope. Sadly they don't have availability for dates we want, and it's a little expensive for what we want this time.
So we want:
Walking from the door.
A good pub or 2 within walking distance.
South side of the area as we're traveling up from Birmingham.
An idea of the towns/villages/areas to look would be good, or specific places even better.
Hathersage ticks all your boxes @lunge especially if you’re not too bothered about biking from the door (though it’s by no means bad, just not doorstep like staying in Hope).
The George is a nice hotel on the main road, pub opposite, one about five minutes walk (Scotsman’s Pack), fancy new bar restaurant called the Bank House one minute up the road and two curry houses as well.
Oh, and open air heated outdoor pool (need to pre-book at the moment) two minutes walk too.
Top of my head: Buxton, Tideswell, Hayfield.
Bakewell? Plenty of accomodation and pubs etc. Lots of walks to be had from the door too.
if you're looking up as far as the hope valley, why not come a little further west and try chinley or hayfield?. both have good pubs, walking from the door and the distinct advantage of being quieter than the hope valley currently is - hathersage, hope and castleton have been absolutely packed every time i've been through since lockdown eased, of course that will likely change with the weather and ending of furlough and kids going back to school
hathersage, hope and castleton have been absolutely packed every time i’ve been through since lockdown eased
^^ This plus there's really only one road through them all so it's always a traffic jam.
Another vote for Hayfield, it's away from the main honey pot areas but still has some decent facilities in terms of pubs (if you want a supermarket though it's New Mills or Chapel-en-le-Frith as the nearest), there's loads of good walking and biking options right from the village plus traffic is far better as there are multiple routes in and out of it.
Bakewell is a good call though that too can become extremely congested.
Whaley Bridge is worth a look - kind of on the edge of the Peak a bit but it's close to Goyt Valley, has decent pubs and cafes, a bike shop, a supermarket, easy access over to Buxton or Hayfield as well if you want to go a bit further afield.
+1 for Hope valley being a horror at the moment
+10 for that.
Came here to say Whaley Bridge, I see I've been beaten to it.
Be interesting to see if the Hope Valley calms down a bit, agree it’s been a touch mental post lockdown and over summer holidays but suspect it might quieten down now through to Christmas. I lived on the main road in Hathersage for just under 7 years and in the daytime it can be very busy in summer but invariably that’s when I’m out doing things, and in the evening it was really very quiet indeed.
Hartington or Hulme End, Wetton, Alstonefield all are small and have 1 pub; walk down the Dove or Manifold from the upper ends. Great Longstone and Little Longstone have very good food pubs and walking on the Monsal Trail / Monsal Head. Birchover / Winster can be quieter than other parts of the Peaks with good food pubs and walks up to Stanton moor and quick drive to River Bradford / Lathkill dales. Obviously you would have to check if the pubs are actually open and book for meals. My favourite for good food - we stayed at the Longstone Cottages and ate at the Packhorse Inn, walked around Cressbrook / Monsal Dale but also south along the river and up to the Magpie Mine, then back past Ashford in the Water (for another pint).
Don’t think we have anywhere that does B&B in Whaley Bridge anymore.
Not sure what accommodation might be available at the Royal Oak at Hurdlow?
