Mrs dB & a couple of friends want to do a saunter along the downs link, stay overnight in Shoreham and saunter back the next day but places to stay seem few & far between, Crabtree Inn is a possible but haven't phoned me back yet

I can't help specifically, but Brighton and Worthing are less than 10mins on the train which might open up more options.

you don't specific what kind of stay you're after and as mentioned Shoreham itself isn't busy with hotels, but the YHA just north of Shoreham on top of the Downs is good, has standard YHA accom and separate cabins and pods

Thanks just looking for a hotel, pub or B&B for 4 of us, but needs to be in Shoreham or very nearby as they won't want to cycle any further than necessary.

YHA on Truleigh is probably the best bet  - although means climbing up on the Downs... but is as close to the Downslink as you're going to get.

Other than that, another 20 mins either East or West and you've got options. It's dead flat either way as is the coast road... but from Lancing or Worthing heading to the west - or Kingsway as you get towards the lagoon heading east... there are B&B's dotted around.

If you want to start your journey back slightly early, and can make it back as far as Steyning - there's a couple of places there too from memory. That is only a couple of hundred meters from the Downslink.

Edit - there's two in Bramber as well... Tollgate and Castle (I think)?

I live in Shoreham. Not much in the way of hotels I can think of but there’s a fair few airbnbs

think the Crabtree pub has rooms

We stayed here last year, in Lancing.  I think we even had a sea view from our room. Nothing grand or exciting. Just some run rooms up some slightly dusty stairs. But the staff were helpful and the room was clean. We had pizza from a place on the beach opposite. It will add a few km though, but not many

If you have to stay in Shoreham I’d look for an Airbnb or vrbo and would avoid the Crabtree at all costs.
It’s the sort of place you’d stay if you’re working on a site and don’t care about the standard of the room and just want to get your head down for the night. Also the pub itself isn't the best.
The YHA is a good shout but if riding into Worthing is a no go I don’t imagine they’d want to ride up Mill Hill to the YHA.

The Tollgate in Bramber (pretty much directly on the downslink route) is quite nice and where a lot of work visitors to Shoreham tend to stay.
