I've got to dash up to Scotland for a funeral in a few days time. I need somewhere cheap to stay not too far from the M6 somewhere between the Lakes and Carlisle, leaving a ~2hr drive the next morning.

I'd like somewhere cheap to stay ideally somewhere a bit quieter than a services motel, but somewhere where I can check in late (mide be a 11pm arrival). Ideally somewhere I can get out in the morning and for for a nice trail run before breakfast. Best I've found so far is the Travelodge in Kendal

ANy other ideas?

Derby arms witherslack is about the same distance off the motorway as Kendal

https://derbyarms.co.uk/

It's a pub so should be open till late (though get there early if you can, the food and beer is awesome). It's in a really nice area for trail running too, lovely countryside

Travelodge Penrith might also be worth looking at, bit further north and closer to motorway

There's a Days Inn at Killington Lake

Travelodge at Penrith?

I have stayed a few times there.

They do family rooms, good food and beer, lovely place for walk/run. All a few mins out of your way from Penrith, back on at the next jcn north.

Slightly further south, Brockholes at Preston? Motorway services hotel (Premier Inn?) , but the nature reserve is nice (albeit you can hear the drone from the motorway).

The Marriot at Broughton is a bit quieter, lots of footpaths around but have a run planned before you set off as a lot of them end up crossing and re-crossing the new DC bypass with no crossing facilities.

Both good for a quick gravel ride too as the sustrans route round Preston is remarkably non-crap and about 25miles and passes them.

Somewhere cheap in or near Penrith, then you're a super short drive into the Lakes for a run in the morning.

We stayed in the Holiday Inn in Lancaster going back north from France a couple of years ago. The only redeaming feature of an otherwise horrid hotel was it had a pool and it was on the river. Nice walk along the river.

You could stay in Tebay (Cross Keys Inn?) then there's Tebay Fell out your front-door (may need to be creative with nav).

Shap would be nice for more route options, less off-piste.

We've stayed here very near Teabay and would recommend it. https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/28251686?source_impression_id=p3_1661272636_zmIq%2BspKH9%2FIFcB%2B

The Kendal travelodge is a good option getting off the motorway at J36 and joining back on at J39 (Shap) especially if you need a late check in.

The run over scout scar and cunswick is fantastic trail running although there’s a little tarmac work at the start up to the old race course.  The route that the mountain festival uses is good but can easily be extended. See for a map:

Thanks all. I've gone for @matt_outandabout 's suggestion of the Sun Inn and a morning trot around Penrith beacon! Lets hope for good traffic so I get there before the pub shuts!

No, but:
A) it's imprinted on my mind as the yearly cross-country run at school
and
B) there's one main path up, one main path down and the loop is bloomin obvious.

Had exactly the same requirements a few weeks back when driving from twickenham upto Scotland to see family. We stayed at the George and Dragon in Dent, and it was ideal. 1/4 of the price of anywhere towards the Lakes. Tiny picturesque yorkshire dales town with 2 pubs, a shop, and a church.
