I inherited a couple of really nice watches from my dad - one has great sentimental value and isn't going anywhere however the other I think I want to sell. Trouble is whilst I know it is worth decent money I don't know exactly how much.
I don't mind taking a hit and selling it to a watch dealer however can anyone recommend good straight one who won't have my pants down and give me fair market value?
Chrono 24 and do all the work yourself? Or just a stealth ad here might work.
Not a stealth ad by any means :). I would stick it in the classifieds if I had a proper handle on what I should be asking.
Honestly, given the value I would rather a dealer take it off my hands and sell it on with proper support etc or do a commission sale for me.
Personally I’d go to the Watch N+1 thread and ask there. You’d get honest feedback and, should someone there want it you know it’d be appreciated.
Personally I’d go to the Watch N+1
Thanks Kryton - will give that a shot 🙂
Dropped you a pm 👍🏻
If it's a fairly well known model you could submit it to Watchfinder and see what they offer you.
That'll usually be there or abouts what a dealer will offer (depending on how many they have at that point in time) and you should then ask a bit more in a private sale as it's a bit more hassle.
Plenty of high value watches sold through trust on various forums though.
What is it?
Do you have the box and papers. This will greatly effect the price and Saleability.
try also watchmaster.com they have a few options on the sale (part ex, outright purchase or on commission)
Define nice watch.
Selling on a forum is a great idea as it generally stops you having to deal with idiots.
As for dealers. Jonathan at Edinburgh Watch Company is great to deal with if it's modern.
If it's vintage, PM me and I'll see if I can help with more advice.
You could try watches.co.uk , I ended up selling my Submariner back to them a few years later at a healthy profit.
Watchfinder wanted my watch sent to their workshop to be checked over before they'd even make me offer. I didn't have time for that as I needed the money ASAP for another purchase.
My brother in law does his watch swapping on Chrono 24...
Define nice watch.
Baume & Mercier Capeland Chrono.
Thanks all for your thoughts etc and to Nick & Fattubes for getting in touch with some ideas. Will chew it over and see what the best course is 🙂
Having looked at the N+1 thread a few times I was mildly interested to find the value of my nice watch that I wear most days. A fine looking 70-year-old gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual. I put the details and a photo on Watchfinder and all they said was "no offer". Not even a hint of its worth.
If you have box and papers for that then EWC is deffo worth a call.
Watch finder are awful. They have to pay for those shit adverts somehow and it usually involves lowballing you.
BigJohn - There are absolutely tonnes of OPs floating around for sale at the moment so they probably have a load to shift.
Chrono24 have an estimating service which looks the model up against there database here: https://www.chrono24.co.uk/info/valuation.htm
I think the valuations err on the high side for popular models, and obviously doesn't take account of condition other than a blanket 'used' but seems ok for a rough figure. To be varied appropriately for private sales, condition, service history etc.
