Just booked my ferry for the summer hols and will be disembarking at Dunkirk early AM but want to grab a few hours' kip in an Aire in the car before the big drive south - any likely issues with the Gendarmes etc in doing this?

No not in the early morning, they are meant to be rest stops and you are resting, just make sure you lock the car. As an aside lorry drivers are currently being advised not to stop / sleep within 60k of the ports due to illegal immigrants trying to break in but you are heading South and in a private vehicle

I had this dilemma a few weeks back. In the end I carried on driving whilst it was quiet. The first part (50miles) has some traffic hot spots that I was glad to clear whilst there was no one on the road. On the way back wasn't so lucky and got stuck for 30mins.
If you're heading Dijon way, there's loads of service stations regularly along the route that at least have toilets etc.

Enjoy the view of field after field of wheat 😆

Plan is to head for Eastern Swiss or the Tirol (wherever has the best weather at the time 8) ), so will be heading towards Belgium then Germany so the scenery will be less monotonous.
