As part of our childfree wanderings later in the month, we are having an overnight west of Hexham before heading to Glasgow, and have a few hours to potentially kill on the way.

Anything worth stopping to see/do on the way, or just head to Glasgow and mooch about, though we've been a couple of times in recent years.

I'd you're going to the pub next door to twice brewed maybe a good idea to book. We were passing one day and thought we'd pop in. They looked at us like we had two heads each because we hadn't booked.

Edit: There's a really nice little local museum/discovery centee next door attached to the YHA. Cafe looked ok when we popped in. https://www.thesill.org.uk/

Little Sparta garden near Biggar, bit of a detour but well worth a visit if you have any interest in art/poetry/gardens. Maybe have to prebook.

New Lanark World heritage site is quite interesting, if that is not you scene  then walk to the waterfalls is good as well from the same place. Google "Falls of Clyde"  an out and back walk.  A good way to break a journey.

Vindolanda is interesting but for free (except maybe parking) near by is one of my favorite walks by Hadrians Wall - Steel Rigg to Sycamore Gap. Lots of  Roman groundworks to see here too.

Check the opening for Little Sparta- it’s not a typical visitor attraction. Amazing though if it’s your thing Helps to know who Ian Hamilton-Findley is and what the garden was created for so worth a read up before a visit.

without too much of a detour and garden related - I quite like Craigieburn Gardens near Moffat - modest but fascinating, particularly if you bump into Dawa Sherpa there. Good cake too.

Walltown Quarry next to greenhead for a quieter stretch of the wall.

Birdoswald is another interesting Roman site (currently a dig going on there)

Talkin Tarn (Brampton) is a nice gentle walk around.

Aircraft Museum at Carlisle Airport.

Not sure what's close to the m74 further north tbh.

Kids?  Definitely enjoy the Roman opportunity. The walk along Hadrians wall is fabulous and the energy expired will settle them in the car. We did the same on the way to Glasgow and it is well worth it. Vindilqnda fa is ok but not as much fun as the walk along the wall. There is reconstruction of what some might have looked like, to give you a better idea, but I’d just walk the real wall instead

Just adults to entertain!

We've done the Devils Porridge before, would recommend to anyone who hasn't been yet.

Checking out ideas, thanks

A slightly longer route on the road but perhaps more a more interesting drive up through Jedburgh rather than up the M74 and Jupiter Art Land as a midpoint stop off - needs to be pre-booked though

The Multiverse at Sanquhar is not too far off route.

Not a classic , but an interesting wander on a nice day if your passing.

Just what I was going to say. The whole Clyde Valley route is worth it.
