One of our dogs is *terrified* of fireworks and loud noises in general so we try to avoid them if at all possible. We're looking for a UK weekend break venue (3rd - 5th November) renting a cottage within approx 150 mile of NW England. Last year we went to Anglesey and that worked pretty well but it's always good to visit somewhere new. Ideally with a pub/grub locally and a with bit of stuff to see/visit/do.
Any suggestions would be very appreciated.
Arizona would be good. I bought some fireworks in a firework supermarket there once. My friend said to the clerk “He’s from England” and she said “Do they celebrate 4 July there?”
Not America.

Not where I live. The CRA 'round here need no excuse to let off a bunch of fireworks
I think looking more for "remote" accommodation rather than a village or location.
It's stretching the distance, but Ardeonaig was always quiet on the 5th.

Ireland, where I usually am around that time. It's celebrating burning Catholics so not a big festival there.
We went to Pitlochry last year for my birthday (2nd Nov) and rented an air B&B in the middle of nowhere with its own pier!
Weather was nice so we did some kayaking and doggo was happy with the lack of fireworks (not that he's really bothered by them).
Beautiful part of the world.

This. 100% this.
tbh I'd never really considered this until I was going out with an Irish girl in my twenties. Since then, I've dumped it in the same bucket as Orange Order bollocks.
The annual Broughton Hall Firework thing has been cancelled this year so if you're feeling flush they have a few holiday rentals on site and are far enough away from other dweliings to mean you should get some peace.

Well spendy though! Mill Cottage is cute, Eden is huge and very very nice.
The Bull is practically on the estate and is decent enough for food and bear and also dog friendly in the bar.
Dunno, but if where you live is anything like round here, you'll have to go away from now til February... heard fireworks the last two nights. Blows my mind how many people have the time and inclination to make some small flashes and bangs above their garden on a damp Monday/Tuesday evening in September. Fortunately for us, our dog couldn't care less.

I read this as "bear and dog friendly" initially...
Mine... i heard zero fireworks from here..

Came here to say this. Avoid HAlloween (which has become all American, bleurgh), and then 5th November is silent, with no understanding of bonfire night here
People like burning stuff. I am aware of the history but I haven't met anyone who considers it a calibration of burning Catholics, more just an excuse to burn stuff. Its probably the most removed from its origin festival out there. Plenty of people (myself included) "celebrate" Christmas even though I am not Christian, just a good reason to have a get to getether at the end of the year.
I'm aware that celebrating the torture and execution of would-be terrorists is plain weird, but as per above, so is the birth of a boy to a virgin mother.
I don't think the bonfires have anything to do with burning Catholics, though. The surviving conspirators were hanged, drawn and quartered.
Anyhoo... @duncancallum I was looking at that area and might have found somewhere at Creetown. Likely to be pretty quiet do you think? I could drop in on my mate Terrahawk while I was up there.

Apart front he minor detail of the human effigy 🙂
Yeah but the effigy came much later. Guy Fawkes wasn't burnt.

Which doesn't quite sync with 'penny for the guy'. Collecting for Catholic causes? 😀

Cheaper than booking a mini-break...
This is cheaper

Edit- beaten by 34 seconds! And with the exact same picture!
Bigotry for the sake of it, and look, they've even got the next generation learning those ropes.

The first Guy effigy in the 17th century was the Pope, so yeah I'd say it was.

The purpose of the bonfires was to celebrate the survival of the king. Did people subsequently use the opportunity to express anti catholic sentiment? Sure.
