My wife and I are trying to find the ideal place for an active honeymoon that includes cycling (preferably MTB), climbing and some kind of watersport (kayaking/surfing/windsurfing etc..). Any suggestions?

We were booked to go to Japan around easter but we've had to cancel for obvious reasons. Now we've got to find somewhere with not many visa requirements and not too many jabs needed.

Mauritius is sublime for anything water based and has some pretty tidy hills! What's your budget?

We went to scotland for an MTB honeymoon, didn't bother taking climbing kit.

Couple of days in a nice place in Edinburgh, couple of days in a really nice b&b in Innerleithen, couple of days in a b&b in Aviemore, and finished with a week in a cottage in Gairloch.

It was brilliant :o)

Australians are activity sports mad so there has to be somewhere over there thats doing this sort of holiday and easter would be early autumn there so the temps are cooling off a bit. Barrier reef area? Diving as well as the windsurfing etc?

Not sure about MTB but there has to be something?

Oh and we used to own it so the visa thing isn't an issue apply online for an electronic travel authority pay the small fee and bobs your uncle.

The other option is NZ there is definatly MTB there and lots of water sports.
And since the earthquake hit Christchurch I'd be willing to guess that people are avoiding buying holidays throughout NZ despite the fact that the rest of the country is fine. Might be some decent deals - just will have to be early this year not late as the Rugby world cup is there later in the year.

NZ, Wanaka to be precise. Hills all around, great trails and on a stunning lake with some nice glacial fed rivers around as well.

Stunning place, often wonder why I don't still live there...

I've been out to Hawaii for the last few years. I love the place, you can be surfing in the morning, riding DH in the afternoon, having a beachfront romantic meal in the evening, followed by either a night on the town if you are near Honolulu, or chilling out by the ocean with some kick ass mai tai's 🙂

Hawaii is also really varied, and if you've got the time you can make a really memorable trip (we normally fly into San Francisco for a few days, then out to Kahala, Oahu for a week, then sometimes over to Maui for a few days, then a couple of days stop off in NYC on the way home). Stopping off in other cities on the way out and way back doesn't affect the cost of the flights, so it's a no brainer IMO.

I can recommend lots of places to stay/eat etc in San Francisco and Oahu if you fancy it, spend quite a lot of time in SF for work too.

Not all of them involve 'watersports' though.

Easter is a bit early for the places I'd vote for.

But if you go to Vassiliki in Greece or Ortakent in Turkey with Neilson you will have a fantastic choice of windsurfing, biking and other stuff.

I've been more than once to both places and can thoroughly recommend.

St Kitts in the West Indies. Look up on of the local diving/eco tour operators.

It's underrated, with an almost untouched interior rain forest.

Budget is yet to be set but if it's worth it we'll try to pay it.

I'm keen on Canada but I think the wife has something against bears. I think Australia and NZ are a little too far for the 10/14 days we have spare. I tried persuading the wife NZ was a good idea but she realized the dates I'd selected were during the rugby World Cup!

Climbing is quite important to balance my preference for MTB.

Bears can be a problem. There are no bears, however, in St Kitts. And you should be able to climb on Mount Liamuiga.

We went in 2001 and again 2006, however our honeymoon was in the Lake District.

"the wife has something against bears"
They're cuddly!
The cougars are the worst 😉

Whistler for MTB, sightseeing, hiking, spa's etc.

Squamish for climbing. Stawamus chief is the second largest granite monolith in the world. Some 2500 pitches!

Squamish also has superb winds coming down Howe Sound. so great for wind surfing, kite boarding etc.

As mentioned, Tofino for sea kayaking or Knight Inlet for sea kayaking while watching Grizzly Bears 😉

Colorado?

Lots of climbing in the national parks (Pikes Peak etc), horseriding, MTB and rafting/kayaking to be had too. Wife and I went there for our honeymoon, and apart from the altitude killing us for the first few days (NO AIR! Can't run!) it was amazing. We'd definitely go there again.

Sounds like us. Singletrack biking on our doorstep. On the beach so watersports available and rock climbing in Mijas (local) or El Chorro. Also, as a bonus, not a bear in sight.

You can come when the RWC is on you know, not all the cities have games all the time and I'd bet there are some good deals to be had on accom during that time. Saying that Oct has prett ygash weather normally .

@ Peterfile,

My boyfriend and I are getting married at the end of August and want a Honeymoon exactly as you described above! Hawaii sounds awesome and we were in San Francisco a few years ago and would love to be able to include it in our plans. Where do you usually fly from and who with? Also, how much do your flights tend to be if you don't mind me asking?

We've been trying to think for ages about where to go and were considering NZ or Vancouver Island but Hawaii now sounds ideal as we want mountain biking, climbing, a little luxury all in an awesome place!

We'd be flying ideally from London.

Thanks!

We went to Spain for ours. Did some riding with Switchbacks and got some culture in Granada. Managed to score a night in the Parador which is located IN the Alhambra, meaning you get to see it without the crowds of people. Magical.

SO after all this time, what did you decide?
I've heard Hawaii is actually really boring and there isn't that much to do there, that came from a cycling/fitness obssessed friend.

Id second the vote for wanaka / queenstown in nz. Wont be heavily affected by rugby world cup as majority of matches have been moved north due to christchurch earthquake. Its an area that's hurting and the return of tourists will go a long long way. Certainly plenty to do and some spectacular scenery in the vacinity.

Having said that vancouver / bc is a very very close second (nz has home town bias). Both great destinations to self drive and explore a little.

The ChCh games have been moved, 2 to Akl, 1 to wgtn the rest in the S Island. Just to make people really really aware - the earthqauke was incredibly localised. Literally 5k from the centre there is no visible damage, the major issues are in a roughly 10k circular area (minus some major pacmenesque chunks). It's truly bizarre.

Saying that you'll experience the joys of aftershocks if you spend any time at all in Canterbury.

However, QT and Wanaka will likely be a little bit more busy than normal at that time of year but you should be sweet and the weather can be better than you would expect. And anyway, the region needs the money !
