You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I am after a laptop from my parents as the hand-me-down one I gave them a few years ago is slowly dying!
All they need it for is internetting, writing letters, storing pics on and occasional exel use. My mum has got the hang of windows 7 so am loathed to move away from that!
I have had a quick look but the choice and difference specs of all the options are bewildering!
Can anyone point me in the direction of something decent and where to get something decent from! Ideally new or refurbed not too keen on 2nd hand.
Thanks
Rhid
I'd also seriously consider a Windows 8.1 machine - IF (and only if) it has a touch screen. They're in many ways a lot easier to use - the apps are on the front page, just tap it with your finger.
That said: how much do you want to spend?
You'll struggle to find a new machine with Windows 7. Get one with 8.1 and you can set it up to look the same.
The problem here is twofold.
1) is that the question gets asked about once every three days on STW, so you'd be well served by searching back through the forum rather than the usual suspects retyping the same information all over again. A better question would be for you to shortlist a few you like the look of and ask for comparisons.
2) is that your question is incredibly open ended. You might as well ask "what bike, I plan on going riding a bit" or "what car for driving to the shops occasionally?" You'd be hard pressed to buy any modern laptop that couldn't cope with "web browsing and the occasional letter" which is what 99.9% recurring of people want a laptop for. For elderly parents, do you want a big screen to help with poor eyesight, or something lightweight that's easy for them to carry about? What's your budget, £200, £2,000?
Generic advice, go for an established brand rather than a happy shopper outing. Screens and keyboards vary wildly and you'll never get that information from a spec sheet so go and play with a few demo models in PC World.
Plus - in what way ids it dying? reformat and reinstall might be the answer
