Working in Penkhull and staying in Etruria.

Where would you recommend? I have no car so will be on foot or taxi.

Cheers!

Staying in Eutria? Just a short walk up the hill to Hanley with tons of restaurants. You'll come to a tfi Friday first and papa John's, over the road is a burger king and if you go into Hanley you'll find whatever kind of restaurant you want...Indian, Chinese, Italian or mega chow down at pan Asia. What sort of eating do you want?

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm looking for a characterful local really. Somewhere with good enough food and an atmosphere suited to reading.

The White Star in Stoke might suit... reasonable food and a great selection of ales from the titanic brewery. 'local' pubs are a bit out of town but the plume of feathers in Barlaston is nice, bang on the canal. If you want somewhere quiet mid week any of the whetherspoons would be ok I suppose. There's one in Hanley, Castle, Stoke and Stone.

The Greyhound in Penkhull is good for beer- they do food but I've not eaten there.

The Holy Inadequate in Etruria is a proper real ale pub but only food you will get is a pork pie

As Jekkyl says Hanley is up the road from Etruria where there is plenty of choice ( not many Michelin stars mind!) or you could go to Newcastle under Lyme from Penkhull easily enough

I second windbag's comment.

Expect to get into a fight if drinking in Hanley on a Saturday night

No help to the OP, but I remember a night in the pub many moons ago, when for whatever reason someone happened to mention something or somewhere being a Utopia.

"Utopia?", said one of the girls, "isn't that near Stoke on Trent?"

No, love, for many reasons, no 🙂

Or try Newcastle under Lyme, some ok places there. 20 years since I went there mind.

Bus service in Stoke is pretty good.

"I’m looking for a characterful local really."

sweet baby jesus, that's the last thing you want in Stoke. Characterful would be full of spice addled potters with a severe dislike of anything or anyone from outside of the 5 towns.

best of luck old chap, you're gonna need it duck

So far Stoke people have been friendly and helpful! Thanks for all the advice. Will try one or two of the above mentioned pubs tonight.

As an outsider who moved up north many years ago to the Stoke area I have always found the more run down areas to be the friendlier areas. Proper old locals type pubs with decent people in them.

Hanley I would avoid at all costs, a truly terrifying dump of place that has had repeated attempts by the local council to tart it up. The problem is they do a bit at a time but never seem to join the places up you end up with a real mix of stuff.

If you are into vinyl then you must visit Rubber Soul Records but watch out for the syringes on the floor in the surrounding roads. I went up on Record Store Day and some of the people walking around at 11am on a Sunday morning were a real eye opener to me, I felt quite scared.

I've heard good reports of the The Holy Inadequate.

I live in Stone and although I love living here it the restaurants seem to try and get away with what they think people will pay.

The Greyhound in Penkhull was great. Nice beers on tap, quite a small place so easy to get chatting to folk. Thanks STW!

was there studying just short of 30 years ago, only live an hours drive away now.......still haven't had the urge to return.

Lived in Heron Cross, could walk to Shellys or Entropy (always preferred Entropy)...........now they made Stoke great, international destinations, almost.

Alway seemed like nice people, cant comment of places to eat though, sorry

Bloody hell, who'd have thought. That used to be my local a loooong time ago. We used to play darts there. 35 years ago or so. There was no food in those days. I mean in the pub. We had food at home, obvs, it wasn't that long ago.
