I'm after a film camera and for the girlfriend, nothing too fancy and ideally something old fashioned. Obviously this has to be second hand and I was wondering where is good to buy one outside ebay? I don't like using ebay but don't know where to start that's trustworthy online.

Otherwise, if anyone can recommend any shops in West/South Yorkshire that do this sort of thing I'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

These Inverness guys are ace imo - esp when there are problems (sent me a loan body whilst they investigated a fault).

Possibly not the very cheapest but the warranty is pretty good.

Actually, on the gear I buy (used Nikon) Ffordes are very reasonable. I haven't bought from them, so my comment is about price alone.

Don't buy into any camera system where the lenses are still usable (e.g. Nikon), because lenses till hold their value very well indeed. A Canon A1 and lenses (for example) however is virtually worthless, yet a very well thought of camera of the day.

Agreed. My old EOS lenses are now being put to use on a DSLR. To buy them new would have been scary expensive!

Al- really just a bit of a point and shoot. An SLR is a bit over complicated, she's already got a digital one and I just want to get her something that she can take photos of the house/days out that will be turned into something real and solid that we can hold to properly remember it by.

I quite like the look of this, that Ffordes site is excellent. Anyone got any opinions on it? It really doesn't need to do much other than take photos.

I've got a manual focus Pentax MZ-M circa 1998, is that retro enough? mint condition.

EDIT: just saw you said P&S, ignore me.

How about a printer?

I'm no expert but IIRC Rolleis are good. It won't be point and shoot, but that is part of the charm.

Minox were cool compacts but not so retro

You could prob look around and find more like that Rollei

I've got a pile of stuff I need to get rid of. Some SLR (Pentax and Ricoh), some rangefinder (Zorki and Jupiter), some P&S (Olympus etc), probably some other stuff I've forgotten about. I can rummage around and see what's there if you like.

Them Roelli's are tiny - and I mean tiny - in the flesh! Cute, your're probably a niche by just looking at them! Not used one btw - I've got medium and large format for hobby stuff.

Wiki has a page for them, and theres a few owners clubs.

There is an old school camera shop in the northern quarter in manchester.
They do old Polaroids which I quite fancy.

Bez- thanks very much for the offer. I think that sort of thing is a bit more advanced than I'm after.

That Rollei does look about perfect, especially if it's tiny. You know what women are like with things that are smaller than they ought to be!

Thanks very much for all your help guys, as ever you've all been very helpful.

Try Rocky Cameras; he's normally got hundreds of cameras for sale!

http://www.rockycameras.com/

I've dealt with him for years and he's a good guy.

Oh and I'm like Bez, I've got about 40 or 50 film cameras hanging around if you've got anything particular in mind let us know I may be able to help!

I tend to use Olympus OM SLR film gear and you can pick up an OM10 with a manual adaptor for not much more than a tenner. In fact I've probably got one you could have for that price!

I would suggest an old Pentax Spotmatic. Yes, it's an SLR, but they are very simple to use, metering is just a little needle in the viewfinder that you keep in the middle by adjusting aperture and shutter speed, and it's a really good way to learn the correlation between them, and working out how to get DoF for blurry backgrounds. There's a little button that you press to show how the image will look through the viewfinder.
They don't require batteries, they're fairly compact, and they're all metal, in fact plated brass, so are almost indestructible; a good defensive weapon for a woman, all she has to do is start swinging it around on its strap.
Serious havoc will ensue!

They both had amazing lens quality, but when I was in the trade we used to see loads of Rolleis in with faults, real shame as I would loved to have owned one, great if you get a clean working model, but best avoided as a first camera.

One camera I would add to the list above, if you are looking for a simple small easy to use retro camera, look out for a Olympus trip 35 SP, that had a great lens, rangefinder focusing, a mini leica? maybe not, but a great little camera that got overlooked in the trade 😉

But for me I would be looking for a clean working Pentax Spotmatic, which used a M42 thread, that will give you loads of options for cheap lenses, in black would be a bonus 🙂

Wife has a 2001 Ricoh GR1 thats for sale. I bought it for her so its little used - ie I should have just bought her a normal ps with zoom.

http://camerapedia.wikia.com/wiki/Ricoh_GR1

http://photo.net/equipment/point-and-shoot/gr1

Tonnes of w*nk factor as its got a fast fixed 28mm lens - like a Ti SS rigid fat 29er.

Price? Don't know but ballpark off ebay or something.

Wish this hadn't appeared. Spent all morning lusting after the cameras of my youth now with no fiscal reason not to own..... All I need are more 35mm cameras in my camera drawer.

If all you want is something simple that will produce photos why not get a disposable camera? They're like £3 😆

I've a pentax ME-super, not quire P&S but it is appeture priority so fairly easy to get your head arround (and exposure compensation or manual modes too), split prism makes focusing a doddle, lenses are fairly cheep (they'll still fit Pentax DSLR but a) no one seems to use pentax DSLR and b) they only work fully manualy on the DSLR).

Simple enough that a 10 year old can use it, manual enough that you can do what you want with it (and therefore make inevitable mistakes to learn from).

How about my Rollei 35
POSTED 1 HOUR AGO # REPORT-POST

Great little camera, expensive as they attract collectors, no real issues, we saw the odd one where a owner had been hamfisted and jammed the lens out, can be tricky to load a film but once you know how, piece of cake, I used to have a se and t version 🙂

|Been through them all as climbing cameras. Think the current one is a SE. The T didn't like crampons very much and the S didn't respond well to gravity from a long way up.
Its seems a shame not to use it buy why nowadays. 90% of my pics were ,and are crap.

my old XA was always a bit dark around the edges. Fab design though, I still have it for aesthetic reasons only.

I've a Canon 1000FN and 2 500Ns gathering dust. With them a Canon 75-300mm lens and a 35-80mm lens that I'm not using on my 500D: I had a 'spare' 75-300mm and the 35-80 I rarely used once I started with a 50mm/f1.4. figured they weren't of interest so have never put them in the classifieds.

Now using an Olympus OM2n and it's lovely.
