Very late decision (11pm last night) but part of me is itching to get away for a few days either biking or walking between now and NYE. Was initially thinking the Lakes but I want to do it on the cheap. YHA was my first thought but everything seems to be booked up though I do have an insulated day van so not ruling that out. On the other hand it seems quite a long way to go for just a few nights and I’ll be on my own as too short notice to rope anyone else in (plus no one wants to tent camp in Dec!). I then thought of the Peak as it’s way closer but not many options there though lots of people seem to ‘wild’ camp on the road out of Castleton up to Mam Tor. Total indecision on my part so I’ll prob end up doing naff all as a result then it’s the usual shit grind again next week…please try and inspire me!

Currently in Cairngorms for holiday period, no Xmas bull.
camped at Rothiemurchas for the first five days with a mate,it even snowed yesterday so it's stunning up here. dropping him at the station in Aviemore and spending the next few days on my own in my camper just free camping.
So far we've done some walking, mountain biking and even had a dip in an icey cold Loch Morlich! Get to the Peak and spend a couple of days in the fresh air, bike, walk and chill, reset before the grind of work kicks back in, you won't regret it.

Doesn't help currently but I'm going to be heading off for a few weekends next year and do loads of walking, wild camping and nav in preparation for my Mountain Leader assessment at the end of August. You're welcome to join me!

Dales? Loads of options there too?

I just scope the area and see what's about for food toilets etc then look around for a good camping spot!

We had 4 nights in the Peak last week. It was the quietest we have ever seen it in all the years we have been going.
Although the trails were a bit wet they were still firm.
Both ends of the broken road were empty of campers and vans. Looks like the longtermers had moved or been moved on.

You won’t regret it! Lots of YHA’s are closed/whole hostel self catering only over Christmas and NY, but looks like there are still some roooms in Borrowdale for betwixtmas. Second that the dales could also be a good choice. The weather does look manky up north for the next few days, so I’d definitely be more tempted by an indoor option which drying space rather than camping.
