...I never know so always end up at the post office.
Need about 700 euro in cash as soon as I arrive
is it cheaper to get it in this country or from a cash machine when I get there?
I have Barclays Debit and Credit Cards
cheers
Maybe consider getting Monzo/Revolut and use them to withdraw Euros when you arrive? IIRC Revolut has slightly better rates, Monzo a bit more flexible.
Do whatever is the most convenient. For 700 euro, the difference in what you'll pay is negligible.
The formal exchange rate (ie the one you never get) Had 700e=£610
Post office are £623 so anywhere high street sounds good

This is often my thinking as the cost difference of going here or there is minimal.

Quite often do that too, but generally the bigger banks like Barclays have larger fees. Moneysavingexpert is a good source of info
Travellex normally.
That or 2015
Debenhams, if your store has a currency shop in it, are usually very competitive.

Christ, I hope you're not including the rock up and pay exchange booths at airports in your sweeping and incorrect statement.
Always amazes me when I see real people changing money at forex places. No no no ( unless you've got a personal pre rate of course)
In answer to the OP, current best is to withdraw abroad using Barclaycard then phone your bank and pay off the card balance immediately.
As per money supermarket moneysavingexpert

According to the MSE link up there it was £17 difference on the 700 Euros asked about between Delivery and Pickup, £10 between high street and airport

Do you compare the rates?
at times I'd pay £17 to avoid hassle on that amount if I was rushed in the lead up to a trip.

Prepaid rates can be OK and there is the convenience factor. Walk up rates are what you'd expect for the gullible, uninformed and needy.
WeSwap card, ramsdens, M&S, my own debit card in foreign cash machines in that order.
Halifax Clarity card for ATM withdrawals there.
Pre-booked cash at airport exchanges has matched the best suppliers we've seen on moneysavingexpert, and they usually operate a "guarantee" policy where, if the rate changes in your favour between booking and collecting you get the new rate, if it gets worse you stick with the (better) rate you reserved on.
As others have said though, apart from walk-up rates at airport bureaux the differences are marginal, by the time you've paid over the odds for an airport starbucks you've probably lost the saving.
Used money supermarket and picked up my Easter euros from Sainsbury’s.
FairFX either cash or card.
I go to Spain quite regularly, Thomas Cook are usually competitive, but for smaller amounts its only a round of drinks different. But a round of drinks is a round of drinks.
Carrying more then a couple of hundred on your person is a bit risky anyway, I generally take €200 or €300, in cash and then just use my card if I need a top up for a short holiday, like a week or two.
You'll get slightly dicked using your barclays debit card abroad, but we're talking a couple of quid, I'd rather that than having to worry about a huge wad of bank notes.
