I've got to say, it comes to show something of the weariness that folks have about this govt, when a Tory MP is suspended on rape charges and the conversation goes "Is this the same one as before, or another one?"

Yes the bar has been significantly lowered.

I remember the good old days when an extra marital affair was seen as a huge scandal for an MP... You know, what with them being supposedly upstanding members of society.

Now one gets arrested for rape and no one is really too supprised about it.

I am so utterly done with this government that I'm now wondering if the timing of the announcement of these charges is too convenient ahead of the NI crisis and PMQs

It goes some way to explaining why certain Daily Heil/Torygraph client journalists are relentlessly attacking Starmer, Rayner et al.

We’re in this mess because just enough people are swayed by the rhetoric of the right-wing press in spite of the evidence in front of their eyes. Dan Hodges and the usual suspects haven’t tweeted once about the allegedly rapey MP, instead they’re flooding the space with entirely invented misdemeanours about the opposition.

Gets arrested on the same day they announce two bi-elections both caused by inappropriate sexual behavior by Tory members...

It's almost like it's the MET...

It's insane when things like this happen and the speculation isn't so much 'who done it' but rather 'who got caught this time'.

It's worse than that because that will also have been the thought process when those at the top were informed. Immediately followed by "how do we manage our way out of this one?"

Even though it isn't Francois, what must he be feeling when he is the first name everyone thinks of?
We are truly living in the best of times.

He’s been keeping a very low profile, you do wonder what’s up.

Perhaps the Torys are trying to keep the PR disasters out of the limelight. It isn't working as there are always plenty of others waiting in the wings.

The PR disasters are their greatest asset, not least Johnson

It's a messed up world where generating controversy is the governments MO

It's a fine line to walk , but even with 5 FPNs for COVID rule breaches to his name, you wouldn't rule out Johnson being the next PM

There are 50+ ? ongoing investigations into MPs of a similar, if possibly less serious nature. these are just the ones who've been caught. Multiple MPs have superinjunctions protecting them/ their families eg Gove or NDAs with their victim eg Johnson

Far from rule it out, I think it's reasonable enough to assume it's going to be a thing. The only thing stopping him will be the Tories themselves deciding they want a change of leader.

The saddest thing is, it doesn't have to be that way. All it takes is for the Labour party to stop its infighting and for the entire opposition to agree to a pact in the National interest. No government has ever had a majority of the vote, it's just a numbers thing. Even the Daily Mail would be powerless to stop it.

Let's just get rid of this horrendous administration. There is an alternative.

All it takes

You make it sound so simple.

No government has ever had a majority of the vote

Broken democracy system is broken.

It's very simple. You make concessions.
You either believe that they're doing irreparable damage to the country or you don't.
If you do, you do what you have to do to stop it.

Maybe not but that doesn't matter and isn't needed. They just need to win the most seats which is why beating them is far from simple.

Failing to do this condemns us to another term of Tory rule. Its a national emergency, opposition parties need to sort their shit out and treat it as such.

Rather than telling everyone why it might be a bit tricky
