We're shopping as we normally would in terms of rate of consumption. The only thing we're doing differently is fewer large shops rather than lots of little ones. On the whole, we can still buy pretty much what we did before...except for eggs! Does anyone know why?

Did chickens get covid-19? Do people see them as some special food for end of days?

Plenty of eggs in Waitrose today. Bog roll too. Even a couple of packs of basmati rice (not now though). No sodding tins of tomatoes though. Again.

We get ours delivered with our milk. We also had a local farm on FB looking for buyers as their catering customers had closed and stopped taking them. Might be worth checking locally to see if there's anyone selling them direct. Ditto with fruit and veg - a few suppliers who normally deal with restaurants and caffs etc, have started selling direct to the public.

The lady on the till at co-op this afternoon told me that everyone has been buying milk, eggs and flour. Loads of home baking going on. Which makes sense as children at home and time to do it.

We get ours from a farm across the road, they told us they were having to keep the eggs in the house as all the eggs were going every day, and they wanted people from the village to be a able to get them.

Me and the Mrs are on our own but have 11 chooks. We are drowning in eggs. We normally give a load away to neighbours but it's a bit harder with everyone in isolation. We are still managing to give some away but are also getting very inventive with different ways to cook them. I was particularly chuffed with a frittata which used 15 of the buggers! Anyone in South Shropshire who needs a few, I'll do a drive by!

We have a full big tray, no idea what we will do with them but one of the local eateries were selling off there surplus stock, along with a half rotten lettuce, I have even less of an idea what we will do with that 🙄

I know they use eggs to grow vaccines on could some of them have been diverted there?

Some good listening about how vaccines are developed here:

I was thinking the same thing. Everyone suddenly has a craving for eggs it seems. I was thrilled to find a lonely pack on the shelf on Sunday. I thought I might be without eggs for several months!

Yep, we're going through an obscene amount of eggs, not only an easy meal but my wife and daughter are baking stuff every day. Not seen any shortages in the shops though.

got 2 dozen of the milkman yesterday, might just last a week. the wife had to ring to order more milk than normal due to being at home so thought she might as well get eggs, one less thing to shop for.

In Ireland I think our shortage is a combination of panic buying and some cases of avian bird flu with some big suppliers. Might be similar in the uk?

Went to four local shops on Saturday, Co-op, Tesco Local, Lidl and B&M, Lidl had one box of cracked and leaking eggs left! B&M had some in on Sunday so my g/f got a box, but the local farm shop had lots in anyway, it’s just too far to walk to easily.

Really? With all of us at home all day every day, we're getting through a lot more food than usual.

Well, I'm still working so out of the house most days. There might be an extra bag of crisps or two.

No eggs in Waitrose today but found some red wine. Problem is if you end up going to more than one shop your not observing the non contact rule.

I clicked this thread thinking it was going to be in relation to Mark's PSA about companies that give STW commission (eg Lovehoney)

We eat quite a lot of eggs, when this all kicked off we set up a delivery of eggs, juice, bread & milk. No shortage here, sorry!

We're rationing our eggs by pretending to be French.

It's the normal logic, in Ireland we're 2 weeks ahead of you so rush out now and buy (while you still can)

a) Computer monitors
b) Office type desks \ chairs
c) Chromecasts

btw, The shelves in Ireland are back fully stocked with bog rolls and eggs, so don't be worrying about those items, in fact pretty much fully stocked with everything, the frozen veg section will take a hammering for a week or two while all those hoarders who cleared all the electrical suppliers out of chest freezers fill them.

Still fe*k all tomatoes (prob come from Italy and Spain) or flour on the shelves though 🙂

FFS!There's no shortage of eggs unless chickens panic when they read the news and stop laying.
Every food outlet in the country has shut down from large national chains like Mcdonalds to your local butty shop so there are plenty of eggs out there. The problem is in the supply chain which needs to adapt to the increased demand from supermarkets rather than food retail outlets. But then again I thought about it for nearly 30 seconds.

I was in our local butchers last week and asked for a dozen eggs.

He opened a door, handed me 18, “keepnem ere for reglars”. Hidden from view, a fresh delivery of many, many eggs!

Sometimes loyalty and shopping locally pays dividends!!

It would be criminal for this not to get the recognition it deserves.

Maybe they're being used to make pasta at home as that's been panic bought!

Rest assured laptops were all bought weeks ago, the shit I'm buying at the moment.... £400+ vat for a 6th Gen i5 shoddy laptop...

The 'tide' moved onto desktops and monitors about a week ago, monitors are still easy to get, but only the really over-priced Desktops are still about.

Of course, in their infinite wisdom they're Furloughed my Rep at the suppliers, despite the fact we've bought a record amount of kit and he's been working extra hours every day to keep up with demand.

Our local poultry breeders had run out of point of lay hens recently, as people seem to be trying to grow their own eggs.

Only four packs of 6 in the closest Aldi to you, this afternoon. 😉

That supermarket also seems to be struggling with whole chickens, but everything else was there, other than rice and pasta. Although my father gave me a shopping list which included duck pate which I couldn’t find, but then I don’t even know where they keep that!

Not surprisingly, the bigger and more expensive the supermarket, the better stocked the shelves are.
