Where do you go for carpet?

I've just been refurbed the room above my garage. Now need to get a carpet to cover the floor and also the small stairs leading up to it.

Where is good and a reasonable price? I don't want anything fancy, but equally I don't mind spending a bit of money for something hardwearing. The room is going to be used as a kids playroom / occasional guest bedroom, so needs to be able to withstand children (and the fluids associated with them!). We have cats as well, so ideally something they won't be able to ruin (I vaguely recall hearing you should avoid carpet made from loops if you have pets as it catches their claws).

I was assuming somewhere like carpetright would be as good as anywhere, but noted that they charge 40 quid for a metal door threshold I can buy from screwfix for 5.99.

Suggestions welcome!

I've previously used a family carpet business in Newton le Willows or there's a more local CIC that does cheap carpet & flooring. Both using offcuts.

Never used the chainstores.

A local family run carpet buisness near to me, asked around a few locals and had a good reputation. They did a good job and year later did the floor in our kitchen.

Used carpet right years ago, the fitter that came was independent to them. Carpet right put a mark up on his charge for fitting. When he came I asked how much to fit a carpet I already had in our spare room and he charged significantly less per sqm than carpet right.

Head to your LCS (Local Carpet Shop). The big chains are almost always more expensive and less helpful in my experience.

Yes, local carpet shop (Nutt and Co) for me. Had experience of chains and strange things happen like a delivery charge for delivery from the warehouse to the store for the fitter!

LCS in Stirling here - he's great for advice and service, has *good* fitters, and often cheaper than the big shed round the corner.

Supply'n'fit in Middlesbrough.
Do what it says on the van. Been better than other shops near us. We went to an independent and got the same crap fitters that stopped us going back to Frank's.

Local Carpet Shop and a fitter we've used since having an extension built about 10 years ago who the builder introduced us to at the time.

I'll do anything for carpet, but I won't do that.
