Bought a couple of DealExtreme torches over the last year or so (2 for me 1 as a gift for a mate) but two have given up the ghost.
One was a big 1200l torch (c.£50) that was used for dog walking for a year and went pop, (mine still works fine but is rarely used), the other was a smaller version (900l?)that worked in the office when i first received it but never turned on again! £25 ish.
Firstly it's put me off DealExtreme as the quality is shabby and there's no point in trying to return them to China but seeing as the 2 broken torches are around £75, i thought i'd see if anybody can fix them (for hopefully not a lot) or confirm they are dead?
So..... who can do this? I know Trout and Smudge off here know what they're doing with torches/batteries etc, but anybody else please?
Cheers
Depending on what's wrong, they may not be economical to fix at those prices, unless you can get someone to do it for free.
Really?
Thought it might just be a case of a dodgy bit of wiring or something. It might be a simple 5 minute fix for somebody with a bit of basic electrical knowledge?
Did you even try Dealextreme? Everyone seems to assume they have bad customer service, but the result seems to be that loads of people just don't even contact them, but have a moan anyway.
Reason I mention it is that I broke my original P7 torch by dropping it down a load of stone stairs. Couldn't complain, it'd have broken most torches- it still lit but the lens was shattered. Assumed that was that but emailed DX just on a whim. They came back a couple of days later and asked for pics, then once I sent them offered to either send me replacement parts for free, or a whole new torch at a big discount. It was a bit slow and awkward to get through the process, and I had a couple of obvious cut-and-paste responses, but we got there in the end.
Now as it happens, I fixed it myself with a new lens cut from a CD case 😉 But the point is, they offered miles better service than you'd think.
Indeed it might be, but it might not.
I could imagine it might take me a couple of hours to fix, at £15 an hour, and maybe it needs £10 of parts.....
Obviously that's sort of a worst case scenario, but not totally unlikely. The problem is you don't know until someone takes it apart and has a look (hence my suggestion of getting someone you know to have a look for free).
