Might be 1.4, but I'm not sure 0.1 will make any difference.
It's for a fancy pair of limited edition oakleys that I've just replaced the lenses on (Jupiter Factory Lites), and typically Oakley say they don't have those screws anymore.
It seems to be a random size that I can't find online.
Amazon will sell you an "eyeglass repair kit" for under a tenner with a whole range of screw sizes and a screwdriver:
Alternatively pop in to your local opticians and offer them ££ and there's a good chance they'll have a spare... if you are a regular customer they'll probably replace it for you FOC!
Are you sure it is is M1.3? My chart only shows M1.2 then M1.4
Ebay is usually very good for small batches of screws
Yeah I will try the opticians- the issue with any I've found so far is the head is too big- they don't fit in the tiny hole drilled in the oakley frame!
geoffrey what is this magical chart you speak of?
These guys are very helpful if you have small fixing requirements,
Wow, the local opticians proved to be a true bunch of either morons, or cock wombles.
Specsavers: wouldn't even consider seeing if they have a similar screw at it as they don't sell those glasses
Independent 1: wanted £35 to take the screw out of the other side to see if they have a match, with no guarantee of fixing it (it also required leaving the glasses there rather than the 10 seconds it would take to remove said screw)
Independent 2: couldn't get their head round an acceptable size screw from their box of screws being compatible, as opposed to having the specific one Oakley sell.
Guess I'll try visiting some other opticians with the screw removed beforehand
I think you may just have been unlucky thus far.
At my local Specsavers, I snapped my frame in half (long story) and they replaced it FOC and chastised me for attempting DIY adjustments rather than just coming to see them.
What happened to the original screw?
The original screw was steel into an aluminium frame so was corroded in, and I had to drill it out. Oddly I've just re-measured it and it's definitely m1.3, I'll see if I can get an m1.4 in there though!
Ugh.
Wow, the local opticians proved to be a true bunch of either morons, or cock wombles.
Things have changed!
Many years ago, I bent a metal frame pair of Ray Bans.
Took them to the opticians and they sorted them out for me for free. Just asked for a donation in their charity box.
it’s definitely m1.3
I don't think there is any such thing as M1.3 (it's not defined AFAICT)
If you're measuring the diameter of the threads as 1.3mm, it's prettly much dead on size for 12BA (0.051")
e.g. https://www.ekpsupplies.com/12-ba-x-5/32-steel-countersunk-qty-10.html
(No doubt that there'll be somebody seling them on ebay too.)
i got some spares from here for normal specs - any use?
https://www.glasses4less.net/screws-c102x2734372
there are other optician / glasses suppliers on line - local opticians might be able to help also
It sounds like there's more to this than meets the eye.
Indeed, the OP is screwed
Aren’t Oakley American? Its likely they are using some obscure imperial size and thread pitch
Great thread
and typically Oakley say they don’t have those screws anymore.
Could they at least be helpful enough to tell you what they are? Save you a wild goose chase. As above the 'point 3' doesnt sound like a very metric denomination I'd be tempted to think its something imperial. So even you got the size right the thread could be wrong
You can get thread gauges for a few quid on amazon that help indentify screw sizes and thread type (I've just used one to ID the screws (5/32" Whitworth) for some that were missing on some old drawer handles) but I'm not sure if they'd go small enough for specs screws
It sounds like there’s more to this than meets the eye.
oh bravo
Great thread
/applause
Sorry Murray you're outclassed in the pun department today!
Fill yer boots:
https://fullerfasteners.com/tech_category/thread-identification-chart/
The only one that I can see with a 1.3mm major diameter (British, metric or American) is 12BA.
Thread pitch should be 0.28mm with the flanks at 47.5° (as opposed to 60° for metric - The difference should be easy to see with a magnifier).
It could always be what's known as a 'bastard' thread (not conforming to any standard), but I doubt it will be.
(I very much doubt that Oakleys are actually *made* in America.)
[I did very much like the 'great thread' comment! 😀 ]
Local opticians sorted me out, and cut a screw down that fits. measured at 1.4mm on my calipers, was a bit snug but fits.
Now I find out I've lost the nose-piece whilst leaving them around in bits!
