The S4 is gopping. The other Deltas were lovely though.

205 T16 is a little beast, and the Quattros were ace.

As for track stuff, CSLs are where it's at:

And crews too. Wasn't it one of the Lancias going off with the death of at least one crew that really shut the book on Group B?

No, that was the model-year after, the ST205. The ST185 (above) won plenty without cheating 🙂 The trick was pretty cool though, ti was actually a restrictor mover which pushed the restrictor out of the way allowing more air to bypass it but only when the engine was bolted up together, so it was very hard to spot normally.

Dad had three uR Quattros, the last one a full Treser conversion (very 80s but very good). He nearky got a Quattro Sport (the short one for rallying) but mum put her foot down - dammit! Great cars!

They took the Lancia S4 to Estoril back in the day. It would have placed 6th on the F1 grid if it were eligible...

Sorry.. craziest racing car ever..

Porsche 917.

[img] [/img]

Still holds records today. It was so powerful it scared the sh*t out of most of the top drivers of the day. Many refused to drive it.

EDIT: I think it still holds the record for being the fastest and most powerful series racing car built.

GTFOOH! A very successful rally car, driven by many of the top drivers of the time. After initial problems in 92 it wiped the floor with the competition.

Disgraceful Surf-Mat, absolutely disgraceful. As the owner of one and staff at an owners club I'd have to disagree with that entirely, though there are some amongst us that don't help matters! Not too keen on your jelly-mould one if I'm honest!

As for showroom car - of course its a homologation model, doesn't make it less of a rally car, just one of its time and with some restrictions!

it's hardly a head turner is it.

Actually yes, it usually is, and in a pleasant way too. I've lost count of the number of people who've approached me to talk about it when I've gone shopping in it etc, across the age ranges from kids to retired folk. It obviously appeals more to some of the less chronologically experienced but the majority of the owners I know are mid 30s and perfectly normal people! Still, it makes me happy to own, I don't own it for other people to like!

Aye, and there's always people who assume anchient history is the best thing since sliced bread. Good job tastes differ!

I think my favourite on this thread actually is PPs ford. Likewise I just dont "get" the wire and chrome, poor performance, basic design logs on wheels. No appeal at all. I suspect it's almost entirely down to what era you're from, my other fave is the T16, of similar era to the celica 🙂

What's wrong with not liking a car?

TBH I did used to like them just liked many other cars but they seem to have gone the way of the chav now - they always try and race everyone with their gutless engines - even the 190 isn't quick. I have more time for the older shapes like the GT4 but don't see many around.

Toyota NEEDS to make a decent performance car again - I know one is on it's way (FT86) but it's hardly pant searingly quick. They last MR2 was great but underpowered, the Celica was just average and the Supra is now just too old hat.

Yes Lexus make some quick cars but they don't count.

I used to live over the road from a bloke that had a replica Gulf GT40. He used to race it too. On a sunny weekend you'd hear him crank it over and roll it out of the garage to warm up (It was as rough as a badger's arse until it warmed up) before going off for a drive. I luuuuurved that car. Everyone else hated it. I used to go out and chat to him as he sat there gently revving it up to temperature.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.........

------------------------------------------

Re: Toyota (And Ford Puma too)
It's not about how much the cars won or how good they look, not at all. It's about what they are, what they stand for too, and a hundred other things that can't be quantified. You've both just totally missed the point of the thread. That's all.

I was just mucking about Mat, I don't get THAT worked up over cars!

The celicas you're looking at are utterly gutless (the newer models, which are indeed chav mobiles). In fact I'd venture to say anything after the GT4 isn't a real celica (and certainly has no racing history to speak of). Certainly the MR2 and Celicas of 96+ are nothing short of eco-boxes.

Group Bs were banned just a few hours after the death of Henri Toivonen and his co driver on the corsican rally in an S4. The trophy at the race of champions is named in his honour.

Most successful F1 car of all time... The McLaren MP4/4 of Ayrton Senna...

[img] [/img]

One of, IMO, the best looking rally cars of all time... The Lancia 037...

[img] [/img]

Arguably the most successful Group C sportscar of it's time (like the McLaren MP4/4 in 1988, it won all but one race in 1989 in Group C), the Sauber Mercedes C9...

[img] [/img]

The totally awesome, yet totally bonkers, Mazda 787B with a 4 rotor ****el Rotary engine, that won Le Mans in 1991...

[img] [/img]

Can't believe nobody has put one of these up yet... An original 427 Shelby Cobra...

[img] [/img]

A lightweight racing E Type...

[img] [/img]

And definitely the most beautiful creation ever, as recognised by at least one other person already, the Jaguar XJR13...

[img] [/img]

That'll do for now whilst I have a think about a few others! 😉
