wondering about this, midsummer is tomorrow, but why? it certainly is not the middle of summer which if you think about it is probably late july.

Anyone know why it is referred to as midsummer?

the solstice is actually a point in time. This year its 5 am ish on the 20th so the 20th will be longest day I think
Longest day is usually the 21st but can vary a day depending on the leap year cycles and other funny stuff that makes my head hurt. Celestial mechanics is very confusing

"Longest Day" is actually a bit misleading. It's actually the shortest night.

Indeed - midnight to midnight ( by the sun) actually alters a bit in length over the year - 24 hours is the average. this is why in early spring for a week or two dawn continues to get later whjile sunset also gets later

Seasons move though...so when this solstice thing was 'invented' tomorrow probably was the height of summer...anyone remember when it would snow in November/December and January...now we are lucky if it snows before Feb!

In my mind, seasons shift so the seasons start/end at different times each year i.e. start of spring might be 1st March this year but next year it could be 6th March...

so when this solstice thing was 'invented

I think you've got the wrong end of the stick..

the seasons do shift, but they're governed by the suns orbit no..?

The Earth is always tilted on its axis at 23½ degrees. It orbits around the sun in that position - and in the Northern Hemisphere, when that tilt leans toward the sun, we call it summer. We are reaching that point in the Earth's orbit where we are tilted most toward the sun. And when we get there, that's the summer solstice.

the day and month that it falls on is the made up bit, not the season or the astrological event

Join me on Sarn Helen in the Brecon Beacons anyone?
Wednesday PM ride, starting at 7:00PM. Planning a tarmac ride up the lanes to Maen Llia, then continue, to finish with the wonderful rocky Sarn Helen descent. Starting at Plas yr Fan, 940 233, off the Heol Senni to Ystradfellte road.

I might do that. Love the Sarn Helen. My main steed is out of action at the moment but I have a 456 HT that will do the job.
How long a ride were you planning? My email is in profile.

It had to be yesterday?

There was certainly 90 mins in the evening that felt like a day on it's own 😉
