Hi team

I had my collarbone pinned on the 8th June, been doing some range of movement work, and very light strength stuff, but was wondering what other peoples experiences have been about when they got back to riding

First time was 4 months but that was with an AC separation so struggles with range of movement.

This time around I had mine pinned on 13th June, bit more straightforward this time so hoping to be outdoors in about 2 weeks...it seems realistic at this stage but will obviously be taking adivce from consultant and physio.

This is road riding, would imagine a fair bit longer for mtb

I was unable to ride for 9 months.
That includes the 3 months of back and forwards to the hospital with them keep saying wait another 4 weeks and it might repair its self...

All that time with no use of my arm also gave me frozen shoulder and a few other problems like nerve damage from the op.
Two years on now and I can finally ride to the same level as before the break but it still gives grief very day.
Hope yours goes better than mine did.

Personally i would consider 6 weeks an absolute minimum. What did the surgeon say?

The issue is that crashing again could do real nasty damage.

My first plate held up well to the second crash, the bone just broke further along…that said it was almost 4 years to the day so plenty of time to strengthen.

You can’t account for everything but if you’re taking it easy you’ll obviously minimise your chances of falling on it again?

I think it’s was 6-8 weeks post operation when physio gave me the all clear to move my arm any way I wanted. Before that I had restrictions on full range of movement.

I started off on road and easy gravel rides to get my confidence back and then bit by bit increased the grade until I was riding my normal stuff so maybe ~4 months from operation date to riding full gnar!

The shoulder was fine it was getting confidence and mojo back that took time.

AC separation for me back on 23rd May. No surgery required as it's fixing itself, but physio say I can ride a bike next week.

Two main concerns are 1) falling off and aggravating the injury and 2) lifting heavy items with the affected arm, could tear the ligament again.

So planning on gravel/xc ride with minimal chance of falling off and no need to pull the front of the bike up.

Went for a run first time in 2 months last night. Shoulder felt a bit tender but totally manageable.

I was about 3 months. I probably could have pushed it and ridden sooner, but NB at the time I was 25 and good at healing. These days it's probably safer to just retire from riding.

This is the answer if you want to reasonably high chances of a successful outcome

Normally able to load enough to ride a bike after 6 weeks but avoid high impacts for 3 months
