Getting a new Android phone, will just swap SIM card so same phone number, e mail etc. I know that all the Apps etc will just get moved across as they are linked to my Google account
What happens to the WhatsApp stuff. Will it also move across because it is linked to my phone number or physically stay on the old phone???
Thanks !
Use the 'backup' facility...then yes.
No they won't move automatically. Do a cloud backup from within WhatsApp on current phone. You can only have one phone registered with WhatsApp so when you install the app onto the new phone, it should give you the option to restore all the chats from the online backup.
Thanks both above. Just to be sure zilog are photos and videos the same as "chats" ?
yes assuming they were sent as a message (don't think there's any other option?) However you need to specify to include videos when you do the backup - they aren't included by default!
Just make sure everything you want has made it across before you wipe or give away your current phone!
When I changed phones recently, WhatsApp got out of sync. The fix (for me) was to log in on a PC with the desktop app, ensure that was synchronised with the old phone, then swap phones and sync again.
I didn't pay much attention to things like photos and videos TBH, there's little in there I'd be bothered about keeping and anything that was I'd already have saved out elsewhere.
Many thanks, I will try that and check the settings
Thank you too Cougar. I know what you mean but there are some shares family photos, videos of cute grandkids etc that we want to keep to hand.
Maybe good to store these on a hard drive or separate storage anyway??
yes I absolutely would not be relying on a WhatsApp "backup" for precious memories!!
portable hard drive AND dropbox/google drive/whatever
a specific video/photo cloud storage service makes it a lot easier to find what you're looking for also!
Having a look at WhatsApp but I can't see the back up function.?
Cancel that, found it under Settings/Chats.
Thanks everyone
What Zilog said. ☝
More broadly, I would be twitchy about storing anything important anywhere which requires some sort of bespoke app to interpret (eg, music within iTunes IIRC). WhatsApp you can access at a file level to drag shared media out of so isn't inherently obtuse, but plenty of things are.
If it's not an actual file stored both locally and in the cloud, which can be opened with generic [picture viewer / audio player / text editor / video player] apps, then I would not consider that to be safe storage.
If they are fond memories you want to keep them do it out with WhatsApp...nothing wrong with having them sent via WhatsApp, but if they are worth keeping them get them stored elsewhere as well.
