About to get my dad an iPad but would like him to be able to join in the family whatsapp group. He doesn't have a mobile phone so couldn't link off that.
I'm assuming if we get him an iPad that has a sim card we could install WhatsApp on that.
Am I right?
Not really, you need a phone too. you link the browser version of whatsapp on the ipad to your phone by scanning a QR code. it then links the two devices together.
So you could use your phone to set it up initially, but he would be then communicating with the group as you.
(this is how it worked a while ago when I set my ipad up, may have changed now?)
WhatsApp needs a phone number. If the iPad has a SIM card (do they still make those?) then I can't see why it wouldn't work. (Presumably Neal's iPad above didn't have 3G?)
But you can't install the WhatsApp app on an iPad. Even if it has a SIM. You can use the web interface, but its a bit limited.
Or get an Android tablet instead. It will let you install the WhatsApp app. You do need a SIM/phone number to receive the verification code. But it should work fine without the phone after that.
Ah, if Apple are being fruity, I don't know anything about that then I'm afraid.
SIM card ipad still available. Really useful
Ah, if Apple are being fruity, I don’t know anything about that then I’m afraid.
I don’t think you can blame WhatsApp not developing an iPad version of their app on Apple...
It’s something that annoys me more than it should!
I use the web version on the iPad but it surely wouldn’t be too much to ask for them to make it a proper app.
Me cynical side thinks it’ll never happen as Facebook want you to use Messenger.
Probably fairer to blame WhatsApp.
Seems they are trying to stop you using it on more than one device. If you install it on a tablet, it will deactivate the app on your phone.
I'm sure the iPhone app would work fine on an iPad, but they won't let you install it.
‘WhatsPad Chat” is an iPad app that’s just a wrapper for the web interface, it’s much like the proper WhatsApp app on the Mac. Still needs the account to be linked to a phone though.
