You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
The one that makes you want to play more if at all? Not necessarily the most technical or noodly, the one that just sounds right to you.
I've been in a funk listening to electronic music for months, and as much as I like it, I've got a renewed passion for playing the guitar. Weirdly, this was what did it..... I promise I'll listen to Mayhem later to balance things out
Definitely Maybe.
Dire straits, money for nothing.
I know it’s a best of, but still..
Easy, well kinda... but this guy and this album.

Neil Young Harvest, he's my no1 guitarist and Words is probably favourite track

Love the whole thing, but it does have just about the best opening track of any album I know.
On an angstier day though, this might be the choice.

I think one of the finest guitarists around today is Buddy Miller. I'm not a massive country fan but his tone is wonderful. Otherwise probably Richard Thompson. Or Frank Zappa.
Any one of many albums.
I love a bit of John Squire so - The Seahorses - Do It Yourself

The White Stripes - Elephant or Icky Thump.
That Jack White fella is good on a guitar!
Or failing that anything by King Crimson.
Or Los Lonely Boys.
Or... well you get the picture.

Limp Bizkit, Significant other... stop s****ing!
Robin Trower, Bridge of Sighs....but ask me again in five minutes I'll change my mind back to Physical Grafitti.

At the moment where I'm learning to play bass, it's the Smiths / Meat is Murder
I can play the rhythm and main notes of the riffs of some of them but the extra notes and twiddles are beyond me so far, but I'll go back and fill them in when I get better.
eg: last night's half hour fiddling was
Original album was Dart to the Heart I think but this is the track that always gets me wanting to learn to play properly
I’m having a little difficulty with the definition of this thread (most of the music I listen to features guitar to an extent and my immediate reaction was to post a el Camarón de la Isla y Paco de Lucia video, infact I will). But I guess the only thing that I can immediately thing of as guitar is this:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jlbunmCbTBA
Here’s Paco, phenomenal:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TPt-nRG74Hw
Also, the three albums I’ve been listening to a lot this last while all strong feature guitar. And I mean a lot. Here’s tasters...

Lately been enjoying Mattias IA Eklundh’s Freak Guitar series, probably ‘Smorgasbord’
I always, inevitably go back to Frank Zappa. Impossible to choose a definitive or ‘best’ album, and most often those most beautiful, head-blowing improvisations happened live.
So today, Matthias, I’ll going with ‘Dupree’s Paradise’ - notably the title track in which Frank’s picking begins in earnest at exactly 7min 40secs:
For completion, an English guitarist/composer - and that would be Mr Ed Wynne of Ozric Tentacles fame.
Southern Harmony and Musical Companion by The Black Crowes. Live Rust by Neil Young and Exile On Main Street by the Stones.
Not so much an album, but a time in a city & a record label.
Pretty much sums it up.
Leo Kottke or anything with David Pajo.
Best Guitar song eva . Am I right Singletrackers!!?!!?
So many to mention, this gets a run rather often.(I'll be listening to Ride/seagull next....)
weird, that showed up as a different link...
Ocean Colour Scene, Moseley Shoals.
i'm with twistedpencil.
axis bold as love always makes me want to play.
Where you been by dinosaur Jr.
I’m having a little difficulty with the definition of this thread
Yeah, I don't play guitar (play bass) so nothing makes me want to play one. Only cos I'd never be as brilliant as Andy Gill. So if I wanted to listen to the best I'd play

either that or Atoms For Peace, Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood stuff.
And this bloke from Girl Band, don't know what he's called, but he knows how to make strange noises out of a guitar.
And Suuns and Squid.
Utterly disbelieving that anyone listens to that ****ing Star is Born soundtrack. Sorry.
Led Zeppelin 4. Just rebought on vinyl for extra oomph!
Alongside Paul Kossoff ..my favourite guitar player would be David Gilmour..however without posting something obvious ..there is a guitar player who on certain tracks out Gilmour's ..Gilmour....
Step forward Bjorn Riis of Airbag ( he also has solo albums ( for lovers of Pink Floyd)
from the album : Identity
stick with it ..( guitar solo is near the end )
metalheart I missed that Television link earlier as the page wasn' loading
+1 that LP (and Television)
A while back I found this live version of 1880 or So. Tom vs Richard in not so much ‘duelling-guitars’, more ‘dancing, teasing-guitars’.
‘Astonishing’ and ‘beautiful’ are the words when I hear it.
Only cos I’d never be as brilliant as Andy Gill.
Well, that’s me ****ed n’all...
Im sure you’ll work out the link to this then:

Ah yes, Billy is great. Also no mention yet of SRV.
Malvern, you might like this then...

I was tempted to post up Foxhole (from TOGWT) with MM...

How about glorious? Loved that 🙂
Luna!!! They use to be my favourite band at uni, even met them at a gig and went for beer and nachos.
Youve inspired me to listen to some Lunapark and reminisce about the good times..
As for the op's question..appetite for destruction
I love Shut Up And Play Your Guitar (I have the original triple vinyl version). But This song really should have been on there...
Nic Jones - Penguin Eggs
Radiohead The Bends, hear one track and I have to play the whole album.
Along with Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
When I first heard they'd covered sweet child of mine I was dubious, but it kind of works doesn't it!
Just listened to 'crazy people' off the first album, first time I've listened to that in about 10 years. Brought back alot of memories...actually quite emotional listening to it after so long..
I remember when I first heard that song it was back in 94. Thinking about it that's over half a lifetime ago..made me feel old.
Are we allowed a few more? It's kinda difficult to limit it to One innit.
I’m not a GnR fan so I actually prefer Luna’s version (although I’d like to be able to hear Dinosaur Jr’s version again... embra circa ‘88). I was a Galaxie fan, from Today (which I bought totally on spec from Kevin in Avalanche). God, that’s it I am old...
Game changer...
Dammit Metalheart! Now I have dig out Taken by Trees version.
as per others, I'm not a guitarist but I love this whole album. The guitar more or less replaces the vocalist
SRV is another good shout, as is Chris DeGarmo
metalheart
you might like this then…
(2 hours listening later). You could say that 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Cheers
If we're talking about ones which I think are most fun to play along to on guitar, then:
Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake
TOOL - Lateralus
Good call nbt. I almost went with Not Of This Earth or Surfing With The Alien.
Could have gone with Steve Vai: Passion & Warfare.
OK continuing the FZ love-in. One of my favourite cover versions and solos. Also one of the best bands ever to be assembled on a stage.
Oh and I mentioned Richard Thompson. Solo at 3:30 but I recommend the whole track.
@Malvern: I kind of had a feeling you might like it 🤣
Iirc, Moon Palace, on the same album, also features Tom...
.
Metalheart is responsible for me spending 3 hours relearning Sharp Dressed Man. The Gibbons and John F vid followed his linked vid. It's the first vid where I've seen Gibbons playing the complete riff live and he uses a couple of cheats that make it much easier. Ta, metalheart.
Billy Gibbons is a genius for taking comparatively simple stuff and making it sound awesome. Gorgeous tone on this:
Explosions in the Sky - The Earth is not a Cold Dead Place.
I didn’t mean to turn this in to a zz love-in (isn’t that usually CfH’s job?).
Here’s some antidote (🤪) and was my introduction to them in the first place. I guess my heart will always lie here (Steve showing he’s studied the Andy Gill playbook...)
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IgNi8fnK6TY
iirc Steve’s guitar has an alu neck (possibly the body too) which is how it sounds so trebleee...
Gutted I couldn’t go n see Shellac a few weeks back.
Have some Bill Carter
Bombino
Mahegagh
From the album Agadez
Any album by John Fahey!
A truely original guitarist whose music in his own words always somehow ends up sounding like death.
Lots of insperation in this thread.
Fire and Water is my current go to:
