For me off the top of my head it has to be Kenneth Wolstenholme's " They think it's all over, it is now " just because of the sheer scale of the achievement for England to win the world cup on their home turf . Although "How does he sit down with balls that big " by Rob Warner runs it close .

“Kirkpatrick to Williams. This is great stuff! Phil Bennett covering. Chased by Alistair Scown. Brilliant! Oh, that’s brilliant! John Williams, Bryan Williams. Pullin. John Dawes. Great dummy! To David, Tom David, the halfway line. Brilliant by Quinnell! This is Gareth Edwards! A dramatic start… what a score!”

Peter Aliss can be very dry with his humour . I remember somebody missed a tiny put to win a big tournament and he said , dry as you like " probably not the best moment to ask him for his autograph "

David Platt swivels as the ball comes over his shoulder, the ball floats past Jean-Michel Pfaff's outstretched hand,

"and England have done it! In the last minute of extra time!"

For the moment, where I was, the people I was with possibly the single best 3 seconds of my life. Still tingles now.

I'm too young to know the 1966 one for real, but of course that is iconic. I don't know if you've heard the retelling where he said he wasn't even really trying to score, he said he was just knackered, couldn't run any further and thought that the harder he hit it, the further over the bar it would go and the longer it would take to get back......

Can I say two?

Remember the Olympics a good while ago, when one of the GB rowing teams (eights I think) won the gold medal - they had an ex-cox commentating and his voice just got higher and higher as it looked like they were going to clinch gold.

And nobody mentioned Phil Liggett on the 1987 La Plagne stage of the TdF when Stephen Roche chased down Pedro Delgado

Its Stephen Roche! (2:05 in)

TV? I always feel that radio gives that extra edge e.g. Ian Robertson as a Scotsman describing Jonny Wilkonson's drop goal to win the world cup, and I'm Welsh. The Rob Andrew "Yes, Yes" is the icing on the cake.

Two for me, Beckham banging that one in against Greece, but super saturday just eclipses every sporting moment I've ever had, my two kids watching mo, jess and Greg take 3 golds was like nothing I've ever seen before. Today they both strive to win...

This x1000. It's pure comedy gold. "What.... a red card Geoff..... I must have missed that???. Whist turning back and forth.

"What has happened Chris Kamara?"

"I dont know Geoff.. I dont know?????"

Murray Walker giving a lengthy explanation of how a driver said he had been struggling with the car, blaming it on a turbo or something...

James Hunt, in response: ‘ and all I can say to that is bullshit’

Phil and Paul when Armstrong rode through the field.

BBC commentary (John Lloyd?) as Murray wins Wimbledon.

Steve Cram has done some great work on the athletics, one of Mo's gold medals and a couple of Bolt's greatest runs sprint to mind.

Pagey (particularly) and Warner commentating on the Danny Hart run at Champery is just amazing.

What’s sad and interesting is that as far as I know Pagey hasn’t done any commentating since and Rob has cleaned his act up a lot, so clearly it crossed a line that someone was unhappy with.

Was gonna put Liggett ‘that’s Stephen Roche’ but beaten to it. Good call. Loving the perennial Danny Hart at Champery.

From the doyen of commentators, Barry Davies:

Where are the Germans? Frankly, who cares?

A rare bit of partiality during the Seoul Olympics

EDIT: The batman’s Holding – the bowler’s Willey - sadly a myth, I am great fun at cocktail parties

Apparently he does World Champs for the BBC some years.

But we're all watching it on Red Bull obvs.

He talks about it in a podcast from earlier this year, Downtime one probably. Well worth a listen, some great stories.

Hard to top this, for those of us of a certain age anyway.

What a team that was.

Some of David Coleman’s best Colemanballs:

“That’s the fastest time ever run – but it’s not as fast as the world record.”

“A truly international field, no Britons involved.”

“The Republic of China – back in the Olympic Games for the first time.”

“Don’t tell those coming in the final result of that fantastic match, but let’s just have another look at Italy’s winning goal.”

“He’s 31 this year – last year he was 30.”

“He just can’t believe what’s not happening to him.”

“In a moment we hope to see the pole vault over the satellite.”

"He is accelerating all the time. The last lap was run in 64 seconds and the one before that in 62.”

“It’s gold or nothing ... and it’s nothing. He comes away with the silver medal.”

“There is Brendan Foster, by himself with 20,000 people.”

“Forest have now lost six matches without winning.”

“The front wheel crosses the finish line, closely followed by the back wheel.”

“And here’s Moses Kiptanui – the 19-year-old Kenyan who turned 20 a few weeks ago.”

“If that had gone in, it would have been a goal.”

“This evening is a very different evening from the morning we had this morning.”

“I think there is no doubt, she’ll probably qualify for the final.”

“Nobody has ever won the title twice before. He (Roger Black) has already done that.”

“Both of the Villa scorers – Withe and Mortimer – were born in Liverpool as was the Villa manager Ron Saunders who was born in Birkenhead.”

"And the line-up for the final of the women's 400 metres hurdles includes three Russians, two East Germans, a Pole, a Swede and a Frenchman."

"We estimate, and this isn't an estimation, that Greta Waltz is 80 seconds behind."

"one man's blazing speed, that has torn this field asunder” –Ron Pickering, commentating for BBC Television. Steve Ovett launched himself into fame in 1977 at the IAAF World Cup by taking victory with one of the most amazing finishing kicks ever"

Am I missing something, the Danny Hart video linked to has no commentary at all for me, just the ambient sound.

That is definitely my answer, I still watch it periodically, it's truly phenomenal, as a piece of athleticism and the presentation thereof!

As a kid I was watching TV with my parents and the continuity announcer meant to say 'and for those of you up at 11 tonight will be in for a fair share of grumble and groan' (International Wrestling) but it came out as 'grumble and grunt'. As cockneys, we were amused.

"Oh, he's got him with a right hand, oh you can't believe it… Ali's doing his shuffle and I don't think Foreman's going to get up… he's trying to beat the count… and he's out! Oh my God, he's won the title back at 32! He took on Foreman at his own game and he beat him at it!"

That Danny Hart one is my all time favourite...but rugby fans of a particular vintage surely enjoyed this Butler and Moore classic.

Shave away Gavin!!

Way back when in the 70's Tyne Tees Television had a Sunday afternoon football highlights programme called "Shoot"
Newcastle had a centre forward called Paul Cannell ..
Wolstenholme's commentary went along the lines of ..In comes the cross and there's a shot and it's a goal f' Cannell.."
Another that made me titter..oooerr missus.. was I think David Coleman commentating on a European Athletics championship final in which their was a sprinter called Koch .. * and Koch's pulling away " made a schoolboy giggle
